Game Notes: In the post game meeting of the previous game, the Rockets (especially the starters) were challenged to come out hard and be physical with the home town team and stop the 'big two' on the Falcons. They were challenged to demonstrate what kind of team they wanted to be. If this game is any evidence and the team can build on it, then they will be in good shape come March. The team came FLYING out in front of the loud home town crowd and opened with a 15-7 lead, but then the second quarter blues happened again for the Rockets and even though they were playing well, they couldn't get their shots to fall and only scored four points to allow the Falcons to take a two point half time lead. Kacey and Alexa were challenged with defending the big two for the most part (with Alyssa and Megan helping when they were off the court) and they all did a great job. Not only did these two have to work their butt off on defense, but they also had enough in the tank to be the top scorers on offense with Kacey dropping a career high 14 points under very tough conditions. The game was also a very physical one with the refs letting the girls play things out and there being only one quarter where teams were in bonus despite someone on the floor nearly every two minutes (seriously). Alexa was in tough defending the 6'2" post from Fillmore with the two of them in a 'cage match' trying to own the high post area. Alyssa did a great job in relief of Kacey at the point guard position and generated some turnovers which resulted in some transition layups. Alyssa is learning to use her speed, but then control it at the hoop and finish her layups. Megan did a great job helping out at the perimeter and having a good game at two positions - she even drained her first three of the season to help the team take a one point lead midway through the fourth. A few times Fillmore tried to pull away in the fourth and the Rockets came storming back - twice on the backs of threes to retake the lead - by Megan (as mentioned) and by Alexa late in the fourth. With the Falcons up by three and 11 seconds left on the clock, Alexa drew a foul driving to the hoop. She hit her first one to pull within two, but missed her second. It was a long rebound off of the back of the rim that went to Alexa's left which had no one from either team in the area. Alexa and one of the Falcons got to it first with neither gaining control and the ball rolling away towards midcourt - it looked as though the Falcon player would reach it first, but Alexa launched herself after the ball enough to tip it away and the ball managed to get to Alyssa who came for support. Instead of freezing and looking for Kacey (which a lot of grade 10s would do), she knew the situation and immediately attacked the hoop. With her head up, she drew two Fillmore defenders to her and she made a nifty pass through a crowd to Megan who was wide open under the hoop. Megan kicked it in to tie the game at 50 with four seconds to go. Fillmore called time out and they got the ball in the front court. On the inbounds, it was a quick jump ball and Fillmore got the throw-in on the baseline with 2.5 seconds left. Time out Fillmore. The Falcons were going to try to get the ball to the 6'2" post, but Alexa did a great job face guarding her and took that away, Kacey took the point guard away, so the Falcons got desperate on the inbounds pass and just threw it in. Alyssa and the Fillmore player went for the ball and Alyssa got charged with a foul. Since the Falcons were in bonus, the player got two shots on the line with one second left. First shot missed. Second shot in. BUT WAIT! Toe on the line. Shot no good. 50-50. OVERTIME. In the overtime, the Falcons played a box and one on Alexa and the Rockets didn't adjust well. The Rockets forced a couple of times and turned the ball over. The Rockets held the big two to two points in the overtime (the post getting none) and in the pre-game the Rockets were told that if you can stop them and others beat us, we can live with that. In a sense of karma (?) the Fillmore kid that missed that foul shot at the end of regulation scored four points in the overtime (she only scored five in the game). The Rockets followed the game plan. Kudos to Alexa and Kacey on their excellent games and to Christina Franks who was pressed into action when Hanna and Natasha got hurt and was thought maybe by her coach that she may not be ready for such a situation. She performed well by controlling her rebounds and not turning the ball over. She was forced to do this twice and she showed her coach and her team that she is ready for these situations and will only take off from here. All in all a good weekend for the team!
