Bears collapse on defence for first loss of 2017
Posted February 23, 2017
The bears kicked off the second half of their spring training trip by heading to Las Vegas, Nevada on Wednesday night. The long drive may have been to much for the quick turn around as Alberta's defence struggled all game long vs USU Eastern - as they lost by a score of 9-2. If there was any positive aspect of the game, it was the bears stellar pitching. Starter Brett Higgins (Fr.) went 6 innings - giving up 8 runs, however only 2 earned. Scott Kramers (Fr.) and Trever Petty (Jr.) both came in relief of Higgins and held USUE in check, allowing them to only score once. At times it looked as if the Bears offence would break open some big innings, but that was never the case. They managed 2 runs in the 5th and that would be it. Thurman Matthews had an RBI single, while Ryan Koop, Mat Brisson, and Tanner Karpinski (So.) each had 2 hits a piece.
The Bears will need to reset quick as they will take on USUE tomorrow at 2:30pm and #19 ranked College of Southern Nevada at 6:00pm. Brandon Hill (0-0) will have the start vs USUE, while Karpinski (0-0) will get the nod vs CSN.
