Bears offence explode for 15 hits in win over VIBI

After picking up their first win in their first game in the program's history, U of A was right back at it as they took on VIBI (Victoria, BC) Tuesday night. Finnigan Duffield (Fr.) got the start on the mound for the G Bears, going 3 & 2/3 innings allowing 7 runs - 5 earned on 4 hits while punching out 8 and walking 5. It didn't take long for the Bears' offence to come alive as the lineup exploded for 6 runs in the 2nd inning. Dean Olson (So.), Travis Ouellete (Jr.), and Jayden Gorham (Fr.) each stroked RBI doubles in the inning, while Ryan Koop (Fr.) and Nathan Coffin (So.) also contributed with singles. The offence would struggle over the next four innings, but in the 7th and trailing by a score of 11-6, they would get back on the board with 4 runs in large part to four walks issued by VIBI pitchers and an RBI single off the bat of Thurman Matthews. In the 8th inning, the bears offence kept their foot on the gas and tacked on 4 more runs. Matthews, Koop, Brandon Hill, and Mat Brisson each contributed with RBI singles in the inning. Cole Cooper (Fr.) who came in for the 8th - went back out for the final frame, and picked up the win on the mound - his first collegiate baseball win in his first appearance by a score of 14-11. Cooper would go 2 innings with 2 punch outs while walking 2 without surrendering neither a hit or run.
The Bears move to 2-0 on the season and head to Las Vegas tomorrow night as they will take on College of Southern Nevada (#15 nationally ranked) and Eastern Utah State University on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
