SW Jets Compete in Winnipeg AA Showdown
Posted January 9, 2023
The SW Jets took part in the AA Showdown in Winnipeg this past weekend. The Jets were placed in a pool with the Winnipeg Rebels, Fort Frances Canadians and the North End Flames (Thunder Bay). The round robin saw the Jets go 1-1-1 which allowed them to squeak into a second place slot and on to the A side playoffs!
They first faced a previously undefeated KC Shamrocks from Edmonton. The Jets came out strong and showed an extremely good two way game that proved to be too much for the Shamrocks with the final score being 4-0 for the Jets.
Next up they had a chance for redemption against the North End Flames, who had given the Jets the loss in pool play. Much like their first meeting, this game was back and forth with a lot of physical play. Regulation and a three minute 3 on 3 OT solved nothing so the teams went to a shootout. The difference in the shootout proved to be Jets’ netminder Derek Poirier who didn’t allow a single goal and in the end the Jets skaters were able to put a couple past the Flames goalie giving the Jets a shot at the Gold medal.
On Sunday in the gold medal game the Jets faced the Canadian Athletic Club from Edmonton. The first period saw the Jets come out strong and take the early lead. The game was quick and was back and forth on the score board through two periods. In the third period the Jets seemed to hit a wall as 6 games in four days caught up which allowed the Canadian Club to pull ahead for good and claim the gold by a score of 5-3.
The Jets battled hard and earned respect throughout the tournament. The Jets accomplished their goal of being competitive and put themselves in a good position to compete hard for the remainder of their regular season and into playoffs!
