Posted March 9, 2014
This Past Week was a very successful week for the Lady Spartan Track and Field Team both the Varsity and Junior Varsity Teams came away with big meet wins. On Thursday March 5th, the JV team travelled to Morton Ranch High School to take on Katy, Morton Ranch and Mayde Creek on. After some outstanding performances, Your Spartans came out on top in order to log their 1st meet victory of the year.
Although many performances were outstanding some individual accolades are necessary to recognize. Freshman Alice Wang competed in 5 events and scored in all 5 events to score 31 points on her own at this meet as she was 1st in both the Long Jump and Triple Jump, 2nd in the High Jump, 6th in the 200 and combined with Zaynab Khan, Natalie Gonzalez, and Victoria Flores to place 4th in the 4x200. Ati Omilabu returned to the track after an extensive time acting with the Studio Seven Acting Troupe and although she showed some rust, she was still able to take 1st in both the Shot Put and the discus. Laura Broman, rehabbing back from a leg injury set the JV school record in the 1600 and took 1st. Abigail Smith ran a very impressive 12:42 to take second in the 3200. Briana Brown and Tea Dorsey both medaled in each hurdle event with Briana taking a gold and a silver and Tia earning a Silver and a Bronze. Lastly the 4x400 meter team of Fara Omilabu, Chioma Anyanti (who also placed second in the 400), Chloe Hudson and Natalie Gonzalez continued to improve and took 1st while running a 4:22. On the Varsity side, the Varsity Girls went to the Clear Creek Relays and ran in an extremely competitive meet. The girls scored 101 points to edge out North Shore High School’s 99 and Clear Brook High Schools 85. It was a complete team effort as the Spartans scored in 13 of the 16 events that they were entered in. Although everyone participated in the win and did an outstanding job, it was the distance ladies that cleaned house and put the team in position to win.
Leading the charge for the Spartans were Seniors Erica Brown and Allison Tracy. Both ladies ended the meet with two gold medals as they commanded the Distance Medley Relay and 3200 Meter Relay. Allison opened the Distance Medley Relay fighting off determined challengers from Clear Creek and Klein Oak High Schools. The lead grew with the next two runners, freshmen Camilla Broman who ran the 400 leg and Tori Welkener who ran the 800 meter leg. Once the baton was passed to Erica Brown, she laid the hammer down on the competitors running the final 1600 meter in a time of 5:14 to easily outpace second place Clear Creek by more than 30 seconds. In the 4x800, Erica and Allison combined with Sophomore Sydney Gandy and Freshman Lourdes Vivas to take their second gold of the night. Klein Forest and Elkins High Schools tried to hang with Erica during the 1st 800 meter of the relay, but Erica turned put the pedal to the floor during the last 300 giving Allison Tracy a comfortable lead, which the Spartans would not relinquish.
To finish off the distance races, freshmen Tori Welkener and Lourdes Vivas ran with senior Caitlin Nugent in the 1600. All three ladies got out fast and finished in the top ten (out of a field of 33). Lourdes won the race with a time of 5:19, while Tori placed 3rd with a time of 5:23. Caitlin finished in 7th place with a time of 5:44.
In the Triple Jump, Sophomore Michelle Fokam let out a monster jump of 38’ 4” which is a new school record and currently the 7th furthest Triple Jump in the State this year. Sophomore Frannie Oyeleke continued to have success in High Jump as she won the event with a 5’2” jump.
