Cody Guernsey’s sacrifice fly in the sixth inning plated the game-winning run as Mark Morris held off Kelso 8-6 in nonleague baseball at Stan Rister Stadium on Thursday.

“This is our first day of getting after it, and I thought we did a great job of competing,” MM coach Jason Mackey said.

MM (1-0) scored five runs with two outs in the third inning, highlighted by a Jordan Frost home run. Kelso (0-1) got a two-run homer from Isaac Kjose in the bottom of the fourth inning, and added four runs in the fifth highlighted by a Kjose home run, and doubles from River Liepa and Zach Threlfall.

“We played all right but made too many errors,” Kelso coach Tom D’Aboy said. “We got ourselves into a hole in the third innings, but did a good battling back.”

Levi Atkins started and pitched four innings for the Monarchs, and Lane Spenker tossed three relief frames for the victory. Frost hit 2 for 4 and knocked in three runs, Devin St. Jean was 2-4 with a double and an RBI, and Easton McClung was 2-4 with an RBI.

Yancy Bird allowed six runs and struck out four through four innings. Kjose tossed two innings of three-hit relief for the loss, and Anton Temanson tossed a one-hit seventh inning.

Kjose had two of Kelso’s four hits and four RBIs, and Threlfall added two doubles and an RBI.
