Lewis River Wins Back to Back Seniors 16U State Titles

Lewis River Senior League successfully defended their state 16U title by defeating Evergreen of Vancouver 3-0 in the State Championship game.  Jimmy Borzone pitched a complete game, limiting Evergreen to 3 hits and 2 walks, then helped himself out by picking off 3 Evergreen base runners.

Lewis River, who led the tourney in team home runs with 5, was held in check most of the game by Evergreen's Josh Lapinski, a crafty left who used a combination of off-speed pitches to keep the Lewis River batters in check.  Lewis River Shortstop Tristan Thomas commented, "We were so far out in front of a lot of his pitches, we've been hammering 80-84 MPH fastballs all tournmanet, Evergreen took a different approach with a ton of off-speed stuff and kept us off-balance."

Lewis River scored its first run in the 2nd inning, as Dallon Buck singled in Dustin Pitner.  Buck was 1-2 and reached safely 3 of his 4 at-bats, 2 by hit batter.  Borzone scored Lewis River's second run, after stealing second base, Pitner had the RBI.  The insurance run came in the 6th inning as Nolan Autrey successfully sacraficed Buck from 3rd with a sharp ground to second base.

"Evergreen played it's best game of the tourney, hats off to their pitchers and outfielders, who made perfect throws on several occasions to make putouts at 2B and home." according to Lewis River Manager Brian Borzone.  "We executed on defense and pitching, like we had all tourney.  That is the hallmark of this team, deep pitching and great defense.  We made it through to the championship game with all of our pitching available because we don't rely on just 1 or 2 guys."

This was Lewis River's 2nd 16U Senior title in as many years, the first ever Senior League 16U team to win back to back championships in Washington State.

Borzone explained the Lewis River approach, "This championship was really about a group of 15 guys who decided to stay and play together vs. chasing individual glory on travel or tournament teams.  The last 2 years we've talked about how important staying together and playing like a team is, taking a team approach to batting, developing a deep pitching staff vs. letting specific guys throw a ton of innings, supporting each other vs complaining about playing time...this has been a true team effort by a group of players who understand it takes a team to win championships."

Lewis River swept through the State Tournament for the 2nd year in a row, defeating Mill Creek 12-1, Key Peninsula 10-0, PacWest Burien 8-5, and Evergreen in the championship 3-0.  They next play in the Western Regional Tournament in Ontario, CA July 20-27, there they will face the state winners from Hawaii, Arizona, Oregon, Nevada, Montana, Northern California, Southern California, and Utah.  The winner of the regional tournament earns a trip to the Senior World Series in Bangor, Maine August 2-8.
