Hip Hop evolved on the streets with performers creating their own distinct style carrying it to the screen through MTV and other media. The technique involves incredible amounts of body language and attitude. If it's attitude you need or have extra to get rid of, come work it out in class!

International Dance 101

Cha-Cha-Cha

The Cha-cha is perhaps the most popular Latin American dance originating in Cuba where it developed from the quicker Mambo. This is a relatively quicker dance, having a strong bongo drum-like beat which is overlaid by a lighter maraca tone, making a definitive cha-cha-cha (two beats) step-step (two beats). The interpretation of Cha-Cha-Cha music should create a happy, energetic, flirty, and party-time atmosphere. Plus, lots of modern pop music is actually a cha-cha!

Rumba

Rumba is known as the "dance of love." Often described as the "vertical expression of a horizontal desire," this dance is exemplified by a more sensuous rhythm, reflecting many figures of the faster cha-cha in a much slower and beginner-friendly fashion. Presently, many of the basic figures of the dance retain the age-old story of woman's attempt to dominate man by the use of her feminine charm. In a well choreographed dance there will always be an element of "tease and run"; the man being lured and then rejected. While the cha-cha is used more for flirtation, the rumba can be described as the dance of seduction.

Mambo (Salsa)

This was one of the original ‘Latin’ dances, originating in Cuba. This dance is even faster and more energetic than the cha-cha-cha, as both the rumba and cha-cha were derived from the Mambo, evolving as music began to slow down. As such, the mambo is the quintessential club dance, being sexy and expressive. This dance is very similar to the cha-cha-cha and even more flirtatious, having an even more playful, yet powerful, presence.

East Coast Swing

Evolving from the Lindy Hop of 1920s Harlem, this dance is very free-form and independent, just like America! The dance of rock-n-roll and freedom from mainstream cultural constraints (at least in the good ole days), East Coast swing is very grounded and one of the quicker swing dances. Booming with the popularity of rock-n-roll, this dance had a lot of popularity with the GIs of World War II and is all about having fun.

Waltz

The waltz has been described as "being in love.. forever." Having a very airy feel to it, the waltz floats across the floor. The music of this dance is in 3/4 timing (1-2-3) and is characterized by the rise and fall of the dancers, almost like waves, as they move around the floor. This is THE fundamental ballroom dance, so a strong understanding of the Waltz will get you right on track with being a professional in no time at all! It originated in Europe and

Foxtrot

The foxtrot, the most popular of the ballroom dances, has a very jazzy, big-band feel to it (think Frank Sinatra and the American Songbook). This is a very suave dance that flies down the ballroom with "slow" and "quick" movements, giving an almost sassy or arrogant feel as the dancers swing and sway down the room.

Tango

The tango is one of the most powerful of the ballroom dances. It is fierce and intense, often being characterized by the dancers have "fire in their eyes." With many sharp movements contrasted with smooth traveling around the room, this dance is very male-dominated with the woman snapping back and forth within the dance frame. The tango originated in Argentina, looking very similar to the sensual Argentine-Tango that is very popular in many clubs.

Highland Dance

Highland dance is a form of Scottish Celtic dancing that is athletic and done solo (without a partner). It is traditionally performed wearing a kilt while dancing to bagpipes. With similar basic movements to balllet, this dance form requires many hours of practice in order to develop proper technique.

Jazz

Jazz can encompass many forms including theatrical stage, lyrical, modern, and more. Still an essential part of musical theater, it is sometimes interwoven with other influences such as tap, swing, Vegas stage shows, and even hip hop. Balance is an important part of the technique as the slow and controlled body movements are interspersed with strong sharp movements. Often taught barefoot, come enjoy learning the freedom of jazz

(CWY)  Cardio Kickbox/Turbo Kick

This format combines various forms of martial arts and self defense moves with aerobics producing a great workout for the whole body. Using a non-contact approach, learn how to throw a right cross, kick with purpose, or bob and weave in the ring. Hand wraps not required but may help the individual focus on hit spots and accuracy.

Noon Body Burn

Starting with a quick warm-up, this lunch hour class will use body weight exercises, bands, balls, mats, and light hand weights in a short and sweet strength class.

Physioball

This non-aerobic class uses a large air filled ball for strength, flexibility and balanced exercises. Sometimes called a Swiss ball, it originated in Europe in the physical therapy setting. By providing a soft, movable surface, core muscles are strengthened through their work to stabilize the body while performing exercises for abs, back, legs, arms, and just about everything! All equipment provided.

(CWY) Pilates

Developed by Joseph Pilates in the late 1800’s, the focus is to connect the mind with purposeful exercise. When emigrating to the United States in the 1930's, his method became a unique combination of stretching and strengthening. Adding the integral mind-body connection, it requires the individual to pay close attention to the movement performed and the details that make the movement work. Matwork class may also use rings. Power Pilates uses more upbeat contemporary music; Traditional Pilates stays truer to the original form of slower, focused movement and uses calming or Classical music.

(CWY) PiYo

This combination of Pilates and Yoga uses faster paced music and movements than traditionally taught. Read also the descriptions for Pilates and Yoga for more information.

(CWY)Sculpting with Weights

This non-aerobic class brings weight training and body sculpting to the studio in a group format. Power Cut barbells (with 2.5, 5, and 10 lb removable weight plates) plus hand weights (2lb to 15 lb) are used for split sets, pyramid sets and more. Weight training helps shape and strengthen muscles while building your body to use more calories during cardio workouts. Please arrive 5 minutes before class to set up your equipment.

(CWY)Mat Step Aerobics

Stepping up and down on an adjustable height platform is the basis of Step Aerobics. Developed by Gin Miller, she started rehabbing her knee after surgery by stepping up and down the steps on her front porch. Intensity is controlled by adjusting the height of the step (platform is 4” and each riser adds 2”) as well as the amount of arm movements.

(CWY)Tai Chi

Tai Chi originated as a martial art. Its current popular form is Tai Chi Chuan, a 24 position exercise set that combines flowing movements with deep breathing. Traditional Chinese medicine calls Tai Chi ‘moving me(cwy)ditation’ due to combining mental focus with graceful movements. This style of exercise is done in a standing position which is good for people with knee issues, as a first step returning from surgery or other issues where more ballistic exercise modes are not appropriate.

(CWY)U-Jam

U-Jam is an athletic cardio dance style that unites world beats with urban flavor. The music will take you around the world from old school hip-hop to Bollywood with a workout that makes you sweat, tones your body and leaves you wanting more!

(CWY)Ultimate Workout

This 45-minute fast-paced class is a challenging and unique blend of aerobic & anaerobic conditioning, calisthenics, and strength & endurance training. Inspired by popularized high-intensity interval training exercise videos, the instructor will lead a bootcamp-style workout class that will give every body a full body workout.

(CWY)Yoga/Power Yoga

Yoga is an exercise form over 5,000 years old. Power Yoga is traditional astanga vinyasa yoga, a dynamic branch of classical hatha yoga. By using the traditional postures of yoga and putting them in a sequence of exercises including the Sun Salutation and Warrior Series, the body is in motion rather than at meditative rest. Postures strengthen the body and improve flexibility through isometric exercise, balance work, stretch, and coordinated breath work. Mats provided but personal yoga mats always welcome.

Yogalates

A blend of two popular types of mind-body connected exercise: Yoga and Pilates. Each discipline has postures which are duplicated with the other, so a blending of these two types of exercise styles is a natural.

(CWY) Zumba

ZUMBA is a fusion of Latin and International music / dance themes that create a dynamic, exciting, and based on the principle that a workout should be "FUN AND EASY TO DO." The routines feature aerobic/fitness interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body.
