Win Pays Dividends

Yesterday's win against Laces earned the A's the rest of the day at the pool and the beach. The bye also comes with a price - a 9 am start tomorrow morning, although that is something the A's have become accustomed to over the past couple of days..

Getting Ready to Rumble

The A's jumped out to an early 2-0 lead against Woodinville, but were unable to hold on as 5 walks and a double in the bottom of the second handed Woodinville a six-spot.

Offensively, the A's put the ball in play throughout the order and chipped away to plate one and cut the deficit to 3, a timely hit away from evening the score.

Rookie Balint Orban has been especially impressive - hitting the ball hard in every at bat, hustling at all times, and always ready and willing to help out with anything that needs doing.

Throughout the weekend, the A's have battled hard and are developing the ability to maintain a consistent focus. The players are continuing to gell and bond, looking forward to defending their Provincial championship next weekend.

Bellevue Rings Up A's

After shutting down the powerful Bellevue offence in the first inning, Kris Fibish and Mack Li hit back to back singles to get the A's started. Brady Veltin drew a walk to load the bases, but neither Marlon Anderson nor Trevor Jorger were able to get anything going and the A's left the sacks juiced, coming up empty in the bottom of the first.

Starter Scott Amy was in the groove on the hill for the A's until an error and a passed ball combined to put a Bellevue runner on third with two outs in the second inning. He was singled home and then Scotty retired the side with his second K of the day.

The A's sticks fell silent after that, as Bellevue struck out the side in the top of the third. With two out in the third, the A's defence made some costly decisions and lost their focus, giving up a six spot.

From there, it became a boat race with Bellevue eventually plating 16 while the A's were unable to eke out another hit.

Laces Come Undone, A's Walk Off with Win

Led by a complete-game gem from starting pitcher Mack Li, the A's took advantage of a wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk to snitch a 2-1 victory from Laces Baseball Academy.

Mack allowed only 2 hits while ringing up 7 strikeouts over 6 innings, after which the game was called due to the time limit. He also walked 7 while the A's committed 2 errors behind him to create a couple of jams that he bore down to survive, surrendering only a solitary run in the 3rd after giving up a lead off double.

Kris Fibish led the offence, going 1 for 2 with a double and scoring quickly thereafter on a passed ball and a wild pitch.

Brady Veltin went 2 for 3, and Marlon Anderson hit the ball hard all 3 times he went to the plate, reaching on an error and a "single" to right.

The so-called single came in the bottom of the 6th in a 1-1 deadlock after Amy and Fibish had both made out to lead off the inning. Veltin singled and then Anderson hit a one-hopper to right that was picked up quickly and thrown to first. The first baseman was ready to relay the ball to home, and completely ignored Anderson as he jogged past him to load the bases. Trevor Jorger patiently waited out a walk to seal the victory for the A's.

Provincial Tournament Schedule Announced

The 2010 Provincial Championships Schedule has been announced. Featuring the best 3 Senior squads in B.C., the tournament begins on Thursday, July 22nd with a repeat of the 2009 Senior Provincial Finals as the Coquitlam A's square off with the North Shore Red Sox. For more information, check out the Provincials page.

Oliver Tournament Schedule Change

We play Laces to open the tournament, not Magnolia. And the second game on Friday has been moved back to 2:30 in the afternoon. Where should we go for brunch in Oliver?

Not Too Shabby ...

Over the weekend the A's were able to finish the Whalley tournament with a strong 4th place finish.  Going up against superior competition the A's were able to make the playoffs after a nail-biting win vs the Langley Jax.  This was a combination squad featuring the top 17 and 18 year olds from Langley and North Langley who were put together to showcase themselves for a spot on the Fraser Valley Chiefs.  The A's should be proud of the game they played.  Mackenzie Li and Trevor Jorger pitched a strong game, while offensively it was a team effort with everyone doing their part.

Other highlights include Patty Williams with a double off the Whalley BL Chiefs, Brady Veltin going 4-4 with 2BBs over two games vs Whalley, Trevor Jorger with a timely squeeze, and Balint Orban getting his first Senior League hit in the Langley game.

In order to compete in the provincials the A's have to find a way to play a full 7 innings no matter who they are playing or what the score.   They have to make sure that they are not just going through the motions and have some desire.  The coaching staff looks forward to the Oliver tournament as a final prep before the provincial tournament begins.

Next for the Senior A's is optional BP Mon night at 8:30.  The Karl Gosslin squad is playing Whalley in their final round robin game so even if you want to take it easy and not hit come out and cheer them on.

Oliver Tournament Sched Announced

The Senior A's are able to announce the schedule for the upcoming Oliver tournament running from July 15-18.  It is an 8 team tournament featuring teams from all around Washington and the Interior.  The A's will play a minimum of 4 games over the weekend.  The schedule breaks down as following:

POOL B
Fri July 16, 9am - vs Laces
Fri July 16, 2:30pm - vs Trail
Sat July 17, 9am - vs Magnolia

The next game will depend on where the A's finish in their pool

If finishing first, second, or 4th - Sat July 17, 5:15pm
If finishing third - Sun July 18, 9am

FINAL - Sun July 18, 11:30am

The A's look forward to some good competition and a chance at some final prep work before they head off to defend their provincial title from a year ago the following week.

A's Win in Walk Off Fashion

On Sunday the A's were able to score one in the bottom of the 7th to beat the Whalley Warriors 3-2.  The A's played well in all aspects of the game getting strong pitching, good defence, and timely hits in order to squeak out the win.  Getting his first chance on the hill since May 15th John Velten threw a great game lasting 6 2/3, pitching the maximum 95 pitches.  Fibish was able to come in a close the door getting the final out to give the A's a chance to win.  Defensively the corner fielders had a good day with Jorger making a couple of defensive gems, Fengler doubling up a Whalley runner with a great grab and strong throw, and Anderson showing great range on a game saving catch.  Offensively the A's were lead by Mack Li who was 2-3 on the day with two beauty bunt singles and Brady Veltin who was 3-3 on the day including a hit in the bottom of the 7th for the win.

Next Game: Wed Jun 16 vs Whalley Orioles 8:30p @ Blue Mountain Park

Big Inning Does The Job

A 5 run inning was enough on Wednesday night at Blue Mountain Park to give the Senior A's the win against the Whalley Orioles. After a scoreless first inning, the A's scored 1 in the 2nd to take the lead and followed that up with 5 in the 3rd. John Velten led the way with 2 run double. Mack Li also helped the cause with a double and triple. Defensivley, the A's were sound, playing error free baseball supporting Scott Amy and Mack Li on the mound who combined for 11 strikeouts. The A's have had success all year with big innings but now much work on increasing their run tally throughout the game in order to have a succesful postseason.

Next Game: Sunday, June 13th. 1:00pm @ Blue Mountain Park

A's Dominant in Rain Shortened Affair

In a game cut short due to bad weather the A's were able to put on a dominant show scoring 12 runs over 2 1/2 innings of baseball.  The A's were diciplined at the plate managing to work 7 walks and 9 base hits out of the North Langley pitching.  The A's had a balanced attack with 10 different batters coming across to score and 11 different players reaching base at least once.  On the defensive side of the ball there was not much for the A's fielders to worry about as Carlyle threw 2 innings of no hit ball, striking out 4 while walking 2.

Next Game: Wednesday, June 9th. 8:30pm @ Blue Mountain Park

Sparks Ignite

Due to a low turnout by the North Langley squad, the A's won both of their games on Sundy due to forfeit. Still wanting to get practice in, the players that did arrive played with the A's in a full scrub game. This game was reasurrance to the hardwork and decidication that the A's have been giving all season long. Great pitching by Mack Li, Marlon Anderson and Cody Carlyle were complimented by gutsy, error free defense including a foul catch off the left field fence by Brandon Tilt. Offensively, the bats continue to heat up as the entire lineup has continued to put the ball in play and get hits; highlighted by Brady Veltin's first homerun at Blue Mountain Park!

The A's continue to improve their offensive, defensive and mental game as they come together as a team. With less than 2 until the Provincials, the A's are ready to flip the switch.

Next Game: Wednesday, June 2nd. 8:30pm @ Blue Mountain Park

A's Split Weekend Set in Langley

Over the May Long Weekend the Senior A's set off for a twin bill in Langley. The A's ended the first game on the wrong side of a one-run ball game for the second time in a week against a Langley squad.  In an offensive battle the A's fell 13-12 against the Cubs.  The A's lineup hit the ball well and was able to put runs up in 5 of 6 innings highlighted by a 5 spot in the top of the 5th.  Unfortunately they were not able to close it out, giving up a run in the bottom of the 5th - which due to time constraints was the final inning of play.  Multi-hit games were had by Fibish, Amy, and Li while Veltin and Dande had multiple RBI.  The rest of the order did their job by chipping in with hits and reaching base.  Veltin got the start and pounded the zone with strikes, with Jorger closing out the final 2 innings.

The A's had a better outcome in the second game beating the Langley BL Jax for the second time in the last two meetings.  The A's played well in a 7-4 victory.  The A's did a good job of getting on base with 11 of 12 players reaching base at some point in the game. Multiple-hit games were had by Carlyle and Li, while Derby and R. Tilt chipped in with 2 RBI apiece. On the hill Carlyle got the start going 5 strong striking out 5. Amy closed the game out pitching the final 2 innings while striking out 2. Combined the A's pitchers were able to give the team 7 solid innings giving up 0 earned.

Next Game: Sun May 30 vs North Langley.  Game time has been changed to 11am and 2pm due to the BL squad having a DH after us.  Remember this will be our debut of the highly anticipated white jerseys!

We will also be helping out at Bat-a-thon / Picture Day on Saturday.  Duty times will be posted in the next few days so stay tuned.  This is a fun day and a chance to help out with the younger guys at Mackin Park.

WIN, LOSE & DRAW

The Senior A's finished 1-1-1 over the past weekend, tying one Whalley squad, beating the other Whalley squad and falling short to Langley. In their first game of the weekend, the A's were aggressive at the bats, scoring 6 runs. Ace closing by Cody Carlyle kept the A's in the game but they were unable to cash in a 7th run to take the lead as time limit came into play.

In their second game of Saturday's double header, starter Scott Amy dominated the hill; allowing only 1 run and striking out 8 in a complete game. Strong pitching was accompanied by strong offense and defense. A clutch double by Kris Fibish gave us the edge in the 7th inning to bring home a 4-1 victory.

Sunday's game versus the Langley A's went to the bitter end as the A's fell short in 4-3 loss. Strong pitching by Marlon Anderson kept the Senior A's in the game until the final inning but leaving runners stranded in scoring position (and the bases loaded in the final inning) eventually caught up as they were unable to cash in runs when needed, and a couple of Langley hits in the bottom of the 7th sealed the deal.

Next game: Saturday, May 22nd. 1pm @ City Park

Strong Start Is Enough

After losing their season opener to the Whalley Orioles mid April, the Senior A's came out strong in the first inning of their rematch. After Scott Amy gave up one unearned run in the top of the first inning, the A's piled on the hits and runs: scoring the five run maximum in the bottom half of the inning. Scott continued to pitch well to add to his 2-3 at the plate. The A's were only able to tack on one more run in the second inning but held off the battling Orioles to win 6-5.

Next Game: Sunday, May 2nd V.S. Langley. 5:00pm and 7:30pm @ Blue Mountain

The Coquitlam A's would like to thank Fitness 2000 for their support by offering us use of their training facility.
