The Riptide furthered their reputation as streaky giant-killers by toppling the first place Burnaby Yankees a week ago. Unfortunately, the Webmaster wasn't at the game and was too lazy last week to do a write-up. Sorry Chatz, no game mvp for you. To be fair, it is duly noted that Colin Uyeda pitched 5 solid innings, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits, 4 walks, and 2 K's. Brian Chatzispiros finished with four superb scoreless innings, surrendering only 2 hits and one walk to go along with 3 strikeouts. Chatz also went 2-3 with 2 singles and 2 beanballs. A pretty pathetic display of a lack of power, but not too bad a day, I guess. Benjy Winograd had a great day at the plate, going 3-5 with a triple.

In interleague play this weekend, the Riptide went head-to-head with the middle-of-the-road Surrey Indians. Colin Uyeda started the game, but strained his back on the second batter and had to hand the mound over to Rhys Verde Rios. He battled through 5 innings, giving up three runs on one hit, 5 walks, and a strikeout. When Rhys left the game, the score was 5-3 for the Indians. Brian Chatzispiros came in to throw three innings, and the fireballer got off to a good start by striking out the first two batters faced. Unfortunately the Indians hitting came around and they scored 4 runs off of six hits. On the bright side, Chatz chalked up 5 K's and walked no one. Offensively the Riptide relied on Brian, who went 3-3 with 2 singles, a walk, and a monster homerun to left. Colin Uyeda got on base 3 of 4 times and scored 2 runs. Chris Payne lay down a spectacular bunt in the seventh, which rolled all the way down the 3rd base line. Realizing he had no time to make a play, the thirdbaseman hovered over the ball as it twisted and turned, hoping it would roll foul---but the ball came to a stop 3 feet from the bag and was only an inch in fair territory. The nail in the Riptide's coffin this week was their horrid infield defense, which committed eight errors. Luckily, Monty Knaus and Chris Payne made some nice grabs on deep hits to left and right field to help out the pitching staff.

The Richmond Riptide are newcomers this year to the Lower Mainland Baseball Association. Comprised mainly of young blood that recently graduated from the youth system, the Riptide will rely on speed and athleticism to carry them to success. A cohort of older players bring experience and maturity to the team. The Riptide look to improve over the course of the year and into upcoming seasons as they gain experience and strength.
