Wonderful Season Comes to a Close in State Semifinals, as Undermanned Pflugerville Stopped by Aldine Nimitz
2009 UIL Girls Basketball State Tournament Results/Information HERE
Check here for the game story in the Austin American-Statesman which is posted online Saturday night following the game. Check here for the photo gallery and a highlight video with post-game comments by Coach Walling.
Friday, March 6
Austin, Texas-- Playing without leading scorer and rebounder sophomore Nneka Enemkpali (the only Panther player over 5-10) for the last two periods, the Pflugerville girls basketball team saw its season come to a close Friday night in the UIL State semifinals with a tough 74-47 loss to the state's No. 1 ranked team, Aldine Nimitz.
Nimitz (36-1), behind 6-8 national player of the year candidate Brittney Griner's 44 points and 18 rebounds, will now face Mansfield Summit for the 5A title on Saturday at the Erwin Center (8:30 p.m.). Summit beat defending 5A State champion Cy-Fair from Houston, 49-39, in the other semifinal.
Pflugerville ends one of its finest seasons in program history with a 32-6 record, a top four state ranking, and an undefeated (14-0) District championship. The Lady Panthers were making their sixth trip to the State Tournament, and the third under head coach Nancy Walling.
Pflugerville closed with a strong run in the first half and trailed 38-28 at intermission. The Lady Panthers State title hopes were dashed in opening minute of play in the third quarter, however. On the first play of the third quarter under the Pflugerville basket, Enemkpali went up against Griner with a shot, fell, and hit the Erwin Center floor hard. Enemkpali immediately screamed and grabbed her right knee. She was helped off the court and into the locker room and returned later to the team bench on crutches with a knee brace. The 6-1 Enemkpali, a three-sport star at PHS, will have her injury evaluated next week.
The loss of Enemkpali put the already undersized Lady Panthers on the court for the last 16 minutes to face the 6-8 Griner and the Nimitz squad.
Leading the way for the Panthers was the senior guard trio of point guard Kaylan Martin (10 points), Neicy Williams (nine points) and Shaniqua Adams (seven points). Enemkpali had six points and a team-high eight rebounds in just 13 minutes of play. Sophomore forward Adesuwa Ebomwonyi (five points) finished with seven rebounds.

* Team Theme and Motto this Year:Pflugerville's team motto this year: ARETE [ahr-i-TEY]
It's from Greek philosophy which translates to "excellence in everything we do". Arete in ancient Greek culture was the courage and strength in the face of adversity and it was what all people aspired to...Translated as "virtue," the word actually means something closer to "being the best you can be," or "reaching your highest human potential." This saying is on all t-shirts, posters, locker room signs - and on their special State Semifinal cake !!! - and something they talk about all the time.
* Big-Time Sister Act
Senior PG Kaylan (KK) Martin is the third sister to advance to the State Tournament while playing for Nancy Walling ... Kaylan was one of only 50 McDonald's All-America nominees from Texas this year... she joins her older half-sister, Bianca Sauls, and sister Cierra Martin, former All-State basketball stars at Pflugerville who were sophomore starters on the 2005 Pflugerville team which went to the State semifinals – BUT - Bianca was hurt early in the season (ACL) injury and had to sit out the rest of the year ... Bianca is now starring as a sophomore volleyball at UT-Arlington, while Cierra is a redshirt freshman on the UTSA basketball team ... KK is the third sister to sign a National Letter of Intent with a Division I school, as she plays at the University of Evansville next year ... her connection to Evansville is new head coach Misty Murphy who was Rice University assistant coach before that and recruited KK.
It also was fitting that Pflugerville won the Region IV championship at a place where the Martin family is comfortable - the Convocation Center at UTSA, a site where Kaylan has watched both her sisters play college volleyball and basketball!
* Brothers & Sisters Prime Time, Too:
Sophomore post Nneka Enemkpali's older brother, Pflugerville senior IK Enemkpali, starred as a defensive end for the state-ranked football team which went to the 2007 State finals, and will play football at Louisiana Tech next year …. Sophomore forward Adesuwa Ebomwonyi's brother is 6-8 senior post Osas Ebomwonyi, who plays for the state-ranked PHS boys team which advanced to this year's regional quarterfinals ... Osas will play hoops for Lamar University next year.
* The State 5A Polls:
In the Texas Girls Coaches Association 5A weekly rankings (March 2), here is how the 5A semifinals stood: Aldine Nimitz (#1), Cy-Fair (#2), Mansfield Summit (#3) and PFLUGERVILLE (#4) ... In the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches/Max Preps final regular season rankings prior to the end of the playoffs, here is where the 5A semifinalists finished: Aldine Nimitz (#1), Cy-Fair (#3), Mansfield Summit (#6) and PFLUGERVILLE (#8).

Here are a few items from the game notes >>>
* SIXTH TRIP to State
This is the SIXTH State Tournament Final Four appearance for Pflugerville girls basketball and the third under head coach Nancy Walling ... the years: 1978, 1979, 1988, 1993, 2005 and 2009 ... PHS advanced to the state title game once (1979)
* Team Trends
Pflugerville (32-5) is 25-2 in its last 27 contests with a 16-game win streak heading into the game against Nimitz ... 4 of the 5 losses were to 5A or 4A state-ranked teams - all who were 2009 playoff teams (North Shore, Waco Midway, College Park, Arlington Bowie) ... Pflugerville has faced 14 state-ranked teams a total of 15 times this year, going 11-4 against them ... In the regular season, Pflugerville went 9-4, then went 2-0 in the state playoffs with wins over state-ranked San Antonio Wagner and Harlingen South.
* New-look lineup this year
This year's State Tournament semifinal showing is made that much more impressive when you consider that Pflugerville graduated THREE starters from last year's Regional finalist team -- with all three of the players (Amina Sawyer, Jasmine Fuller, Kayla Sanders) now playing NCAA Division I or II basketball at Stephen F. Austin, Angelo State and Fresno State, respectively.
* Lucky 13 Regional Finals
The 2009 Regional Championship finals showing was P'ville's 13th in school history, second in a row and the fourth under Coach Walling (1993, 2005, 2008, 2009).
*Team stat leaders
The Lady Panthers feature a very balanced team attack ... PHS's tallest player, 6-1 sophomore post Nneka Enemkpali, leads the team in scoring (13.0 ppg), rebounding (11.3 rpg), blocked shots (117, 3.3 bpg) and field goal pct. (58%) and has 13 double-doubles (double-figure points & rebounds) in the last 24 contests ... senior 5-6 PG Kaylan Martin is second in scoring (12.3 ppg) and is first in team assists (3.7 apg) and steals (100, 2.7 spg) ... the starting senior guard duo of 5-7 Shaniqua Adams (9.3 ppg, 41 3-pointers) and 5-5 Neicy Williams (4.8 ppg, 2.2 steals/game), along with 5-9 sophomore forward Adesuwa Ebomwonyi (6.9 ppg, 5.7 rpg) are the other three starters.
Key contributions also come from 5-8 junior forward Christie Mooney (6.2 ppg, 4.2 rpg), 5-7 sophomore guard Curtiesha Woods (3.3 ppg) and 5-7 sophomore forward Shoneice Yett (2.0 ppg, 2.8 rpg).
* PHS coaches have State Championship Final Four and Erwin Center experience!
Head Coach Nancy Walling starred at powerhouse Canyon HS which won TWO State Championships at the Erwin Center ... She then went on to star at The University of Texas for coach Jody Conradt from 1979-83 and helped UT go an amazing 126-19, advance to the 1981 AIAW National Championship Game and to the NCAA "Elite Eight" in 1983!
Assistant coach April Ellickson was a senior and starting guard for the 1993 Pflugerville team and Coach Walling when the Lady Panthers advanced to the State Tournament at the Erwin Center ... She went on to have a standout college career at Cameron University (Okla). … Assistant coach Patrick Hinson was girls assistant coach at Houston's Westbury Christian School in 2003-04 and 2004-05 when Westbury advanced to the TAPPS State Tournament final four semifinals.

The Pflugerville Player Perspective: Going to the Championship!
Tuesday, March 3
At practice Monday, the Lady Panthers were asked what it meant to advance to the 2009 State Tournament final four this weekend, and here's what they said!
Question: What does it mean to you to be headed to Austin for the State Championship "final four" semifinals?
"This is a dream come true and what a way to end my time at Pflugerville! Everyone played a part in getting us to State. When some starters were in foul trouble at Regionals, so many other players stepped up. Going to the State Tournament is something that I've wanted for five years, ever since I was in the eighth grade and watched my two older sisters (Cierra Martin, Bianca Sauls) go to State in 2005. It is a really big deal for me and for my family to have all three of us get to the State Tournament. Not every family can have that happen in their lives."
#00 Kaylan Martin, senior guard
"It's a very exciting time for us and a dream come true! it feels so good to have met one of our big goals to get to the State Tournament and to know our hard work has paid off."
#12 Christie Mooney, junior forward
"Getting to the State Tournament is a great accomplishment for us. It's exciting, and I'm thinking about all the hard work we've all put in to reach our goal."
#11 Nneka Enemkpali, sophomore forward
"One of our many goals was to get to State and win it. It doesn't even feel REAL yet! I am so excited!"
#20 Curtiesha Woods, sophomore guard
"Getting to the State Tournament means that myself and the rest of the seniors have been good leaders, and I'm proud that we've reached one of our big goals!"
#24 Neicy Williams, senior guard
"All I could say Saturday after we beat Jay is that the feeling I had was awesome and it was a dream come true! This means that everything paid off after we've worked so hard. People underestimated Pflugerville all year long, and now we've seen what our hard work can accomplish."
#30 Shaniqua Adams, senior guard
"This means so much! A lot of seniors never get to experience playing in the State Tournament, and as a freshman I am getting this experience! It's a blessing."
#32 Ari Booth, freshman guard
"This mean a lot to me, especially since I'm a sophomore and I'm so happy to just be a part of our team this year. This State Tournament will add to the tradition of Pflugerville Basketball and will keep our legacy going!"
#34 Deborah Roucloux, sophomore guard

Panther Squads Gets Top Billing in Austin American-Statesman for Undefeated District Seasons!
Pflugerville is the ONLY Texas 5A school to have both its girls and boys basketball teams go undefeated in District play this season
Tuesday, Feb. 24
Both Pflugerville basketball team received a well-deserved shared headline in Tuesday's edition of the Austin American-Statesman. High school reporter Rick Cantu's weekly column highlighted the PHS girls and boys squads which both went undefeated in District 25-5A play to capture the 2008-09 district titles. Head coach Nancy Walling's Lady Panthers and Mike Murphy's boys team both were 14-0 in the District, as Pflugerville become the ONLY Texas 5A school this season to have both its girls and boys teams go unbeaten in their respective Districts !!!
The article, "Perfection makes Panthers one of a kind in Class 5A," can be found at http://www.statesman.com/sports/content/sports/stories/highschool/02/24/0224prepcol.html. The teams also share similarities in underclassmen depth and in their coaches' shared alma mater -- both Walling and Murphy were basketball standouts at The University of Texas.
Congrats to Coach Murphy and the 32-3 Panther boys team which picked up its sixth consecutive District crown, and best wishes to them as they begin their State playoff schedule Tuesday (Feb. 24, 6 p.m.) with Bi-District play against San Antonio MacArthur at Kyle's Lehman High School!
Panther Alumni Update: Kassandra Bills ends outstanding career as Concordia University's all-time leading scorer
Former Class of 2005 Lady Panther end collegiate career with 1,675 points and numerous conference and national honors; Bills featured as News 8 Austin "Athlete of the Week"
Tuesday, Feb. 24
"I want to congratulate both Kassandra (Bills) and Tiffany (Turner) for their four-year basketball careers at Concordia and their development as student-athletes. I had the pleasure to watch them play at Concordia and as their former coach, I really respect all the hard work they put into basketball and their academics while in college. Both are on target to graduate and both have earned Academic All-Conference honors, with Kassandra a biology major and Tiffany a kinesiology major. We at Pflugerville High School couldn't be prouder of what they've accomplished and how they continue to represent themselves, P'ville and Concordia in a first-class manner. We all know they will have great successes upon graduation!"
Pflugerville head coach Nancy Walling
Former Pflugerville guard Kassandra Bills put her stamp on the Concordia University (Austin, Texas) basketball program this week, closing out her career as the school's all-time leading women's basketball scorer.
The 5-6 shooting guard developed into one of the top Division III players in the nation during her four-year career as a starter for the Concordia Tornados. Bills, a 2005 graduate of PHS, collected 1,675 points in her illustrious Concordia career. She earned All-American Southwest Conference honors her first three seasons and was the ASC Preseason Player of the Year this fall.
Bills was one of two former Pflugerville basketball standouts on the Concordia hoops team, as she was joined on the Tornado roster by fellow senior guard Tiffany Turner. Bills was an All-State and All-District guard, and Turner an All-District standout, at PHS for Coach Nancy Walling. Both were instrumental in helping the Lady Panthers advance to the 2005 State 5A semifinals (final four) as seniors.
The total student-athlete while at Pflugerville, Kassandra was an Academic All-State and All-District scholar-athlete and was team MVP in 2005.
In the last week of her college career, Bills created a national sensation and a run to the NCAA record books when she poured in a career-high 44 points - scoring 42 in the final half !!! - in a 97-95 overtime victory against Texas Lutheran on Valentine's Day. Those 42 second-half points are thought to be a NCAA Division III record for most points scored in a single half.
For her efforts last week, Kassandra was selected to the Division III D3Hoops.com National Team of the Week and was the ASC West Division Player of the Week. Check out the sports feature on Bills on News 8 Austin's website (www.news8austin.com/content/sports/athlete_of_the_week/?ArID=232924&SecID=31), as the local TV station selected Bills as the "Athlete of the Week" on February 23. To read more about Bills and Concordia basketball, go to www.athletics.concordia.edu/.
Concordia just missed out on the conference playoffs, going 11-12 overall and 11-10 in the ASC. Kassandra was the Tornado's leading scorer 15 times this season, averaging team-highs of 19.1 points per game overall and 19.8 ppg in conference action. The all-around player also led Concordia in rebounding (7.3 rpg) and in steals with 76 (3.3 thefts per game).
Kassandra will graduate with a degree in biology and is looking towards a career in medicine. The Academic All-Conference standout might put those plans on hold and extend her basketball career, however, as she hopes to pursue professional basketball overseas.

In the News: Interest & coverage of PHS Girls Basketball grows!
Fri., Jan. 23
"I appreciate our program's media coverage throughout the years. Our players - and their families - deserve this recent recognition. These are great young ladies who understand what it means to be a member of the Pflugerville girls basketball team.
We expect them to make huge time commitments and sacrifices to make our program successful. Held to a higher standard than your average high school student, our girls know it's a privilege to participate in our program. They keep up their academics, train hard and give up a lot of things and free time that their peers enjoy. They participate in community service and are role models for younger kids, a big responsibility they handle well.
The lessons of teamwork, dedication, responsibility, and balancing fun and schoolwork will be with them always. Our girls represent the hard-working and committed PHS students, and we're thrilled to tell our stories and show the community that there's much promise and leadership in our next generation!"

Giving Back: Lady Panthers go to "Operation Blue Santa" Warehouse to help those in need
Fri., Dec. 19
This week, the Pflugerville teams enjoyed a rare weekday off before returning to play Friday against Austin's Westlake High School in district action. Despite the time away from competition, the Panthers were extremely busy with off-court and community service activities.
On Tuesday evening (Dec. 16), the Panthers continued their holiday tradition of community service. Every year, Nancy Walling's players have volunteered at numerous community organizations, and for the third consecutive year the team and coaches went to the Operation Blue Santa warehouse in Pflugerville and sorted, selected and wrapped presents for those in need. The Blue Santa warehouse in Pflugerville is coordinated by Cpl. Mike Clowdus of the Pflugerville Police Department.
The Blue Santa program (www.bluesanta.org) helps 15,000 children and their families in Central Texas during the holiday season, collecting and distributing toys and food to families who need assistance.
"One of the most important things we do as a program is to connect to the community through volunteerism," noted head coach Walling. "We want the girls to understand how much of a privilege and opportunity they have as high school student-athletes. We have a wonderful and supportive community of administrators, teachers and parents at PHS, and we are fortunate to play and compete at the highest levels.
"In turn, it's our responsibility to 'give back' to the community to show appreciation for all we have," Walling continued. "There can be no greater gift than to give our time to those who need assistance. We all have fun as a group doing these projects, and I know that our players feel good when they see that their actions have a positive impact in our community."

Austin American Statesman's Central Texas Preview
Tue., Nov. 18- In the Central Texas high school preview published on Nov. 18, the Austin American Statesman high school writers Rick Cantu, Butch Hart and Danny Davis had these great things to say about the Pflugerville girls varsity team:
"Girls basketball moves into high gear with Central Texas boasting a number of top players and several state-ranked teams. Pflugerville, Marble Falls and Del Valle appear early threats to reach the state tournament while Georgetown, Westlake, Liberty Hill, Llano and Hays have solid traditions and excellent returning talent.
Del Valle's Shanay Washington —a Baylor commitment who missed last year with an injury — should be exciting, while Pflugerville's duo of guard Kaylan Martin and post Nneka Enemkpali should keep Panthers coach Nancy Walling smiling."
In the Statesman's ranking the top teams in preseason, the Lady Panthers got the No. 1 nod
Top 10 teams:
1. Pflugerville: Coach Nancy Walling's Panthers are tall, talented and a traditional state power.
2. Del Valle: Multi-sport star Shanay Washington leads coach Tawni Angel's Cardinals.
3. Georgetown: Strong skills and Crystal Atwood make coach Rhonda Farney's team tough.
4. Cedar Park: Maddie Wheeler leads Mark Myer's Timberwolves.
Among the Players to Watch:
Nneka Enemkpali, Pflugerville: Last year's Central Texas newcomer of the year is a defensive force in the post.
Kaylan Martin, Pflugerville: The 5-7 point guard, coming off All-Central Texas and district MVP honors, has signed with the University of Evansville.
