Josh McKay, long-time coach at Marion County High School, was inducted into the 5th Region Athletic Directors Hall of Fame in a ceremony prior to the Region Championship game last night at Nelson County High School.

McKay attended Rosenwald High School and graduated from Lebanon High School in 1964 before joining the United States Army.  In 1970 he enrolled at Campbellsville College (now Campbellsville University) and became a standout rebounder for the Tigers' basketball team, still holding the record for rebounds in a single game with 27.  He began his coaching career as an assistant in 1974 and served as head coach at Marion County High School 1975-1977.  He returned to coaching in 1983 at Marion County as an assistant to Tim Davis, serving on the staff for the 1992 Region Championship team and the 1993 State Championship team.  He also served as an assistant to Kelly Wells when Marion County won the 1997 5th Region Championship and served with every head coach at M.C.H.S. from 1983 until his retirement in 2009.

McKay joins six other inductees to the 2010 5th Region Hall of Fame class.  The other inductees are: Joe Washington (Fort Knox), Rudy McKinney (North Hardin), Seaborn Ellzey (Caverna), Dewayne Forbis (Hart County, WLOC radio), Jim Roby (Bardstown), and Bev Hart (Bethlehem).

Season Ends For Knights As Eagles Dominate Boards (2/24/2010)

The Marion County Knights played an almost perfect first half but could not keep up the pace in the second half.  Campbellsville's size eventually wore down the Knights and the Eagles advanced to Saturday's championship game of the 20th District Tournament with a 75-59 win.

Marion County seniors Austin Spalding and Josh Reed led the way for the Knights, combining to score 26 of Marion County's 28 first-half points as Marion County shot 67% from the floor for the first half.  Coach Tim Peterson also employed a box-and-one defense for the first time this season which helped hold 5th Region Player of the Year Bryton Taylor to just three points in the first half and nine for the game.  Without Taylor's drives to the basket, the Eagles settled for perimeter shots --shooting 13 three-pointers before the half and only hitting three -- and the Knights took a 28-26 lead at the half.

In the second half Marion County continued to shoot well, but could not sustain the pace from the first half.  Campbellsville's size advantage limited the Knights to one offensive rebound for the game as the Eagles out-rebounded the Knights 38-22 and scored several second-chance baskets in the third and fourth quarters.  Forwards Jordan Purcell and Aaron Schwoebel dominated the paint on the offensive end for Campbellsville, scoring 17 and 13 points respectively, while Thomas Downs owned the boards for the Eagles.  As Marion County had to focus on the interior, Eagle guard Matthew Davis took advantage of openings to score 21 points for the home team.

Marion County's Kendrick Knopp sank three shots from behind the arc in the second half and finished the game with 11 points.  But it was not enough to overcome Campbellsville's inside advantage and the Knights could get no closer than eight points in the final quarter.  You can read more about this game by clicking onthe score in the right hand column, or by clicking here.

The Boys 20th District Tournament begins tonight at Campbellsville's Paul J. Coop Memorial Gymnasium when host and #1 seed Campbellsville takes on #4 Marion County.  The Eagles defeated the Knights in both their match-ups this season, winning a hard-fought contest at Campbellsville 81-73, then winning easily at the Roby Dome two weeks later 79-55.

The Eagles boast one of the biggest front lines in the region as well as the 5th Region Player of the Year in guard Bryton Taylor, and are favored by the Lexington Herald-Leader to win the region championship and advance to the Sweet 16 in Rupp Arena.  Marion County will have to find a way to handle Campbellsville's size down low while containing Taylor and shooting guard Matthew Davis on the perimeter.  Tip-off for this game is scheduled for 7:30 PM.

Marion County's Austin Spalding (left), Adair County's Kyle Sandusky (center), and Taylor County's Lloyd Stotts (right) will lead their teams into the 20th District Tournament.  All three players earned all-season district and region honors.

In the other half of the bracket, Taylor County will square off with Adair County on Thursday at 7:30 PM.  The Cardinals and Indians split two low-scoring affairs this season with Adair County winning at home 41-35 on December 11 and Taylor County winning on their home floor 43-30 on January 26.

The winner of each game will meet in the Championship Game on Saturday at 7:30 PM.

Three Knights Earn Season Honors (2/23/2010)

Three members of the Marion County Knights have earned recognition for the 2009-2010 season.  Senior guard Austin Spalding was selected for the All-5th Region Team by a poll of the region's head coaches.  Spalding was also named to the All-Season 20th District team.  Spalding averaged 16.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per game during the season and led his team in scoring, rebounding, and steals, and was second in assists.

Spalding was joined on the All-Season 20th District Team by junior Kendrick Knopp.  The sharp-shooting guard averaged 12.0 points per game and was one of the top three-point threats in the state this season, sinking 94 shots from behind the three-point arc and shooting 42.0% from that range.

Junior guard Josh Brockman earned 20th District All-Academic honors.

Also earning all-season honors for Marion County was junior guard Josh Brockman, who was named to the 20th District All-Academic team.  Brockman led the Knights' junior varsity squad in scoring at 11.5 points per game.

Defenders' Size Too Much; Knights Fade at Bryan Station (2/20/2010)

Kendrick Knopp sinks one of his five three-pointers over Bryan Station's Tyler Smothers.  Knopp finished the game with 19 points.

The Marion County Knights fought to keep pace with the Bryan Station Defenders for three quarters, but Bryan Station's size and athleticism proved to be too much as the Defenders pulled away in the fourth for the 68-52 win.

Marion County suffered a setback early in the first quarter when starting forward Mark Corbett injured his rib cage on a play under the Defenders' basket.  Corbett was replaced by Valis Mudd and would not return to the game.  The Knights still held a 14-10 lead after the first period with baskets by five different players.  In the second quarter Bryan Station turned up the defensive pressure and forced Marion County into several costly turnovers as the Defenders took an eight-point lead at the half, 32-24.

(Left) Bryson Bell (5) scores in the lane against the Defenders.  (Right) Valis Mudd draws a double-team in the post from Bryan Station's Ryan Jones (24) and Deon Renfro (45).

In the third quarter Bryan Station's James Evans was unstoppable in the paint, scoring 14 of his game-high 30 points in the period.  Kendrick Knopp helped keep the Knights close, draining three shots from beyond the three-point line.  The Knights also got points in the lane from Mudd, Bryson Bell, and Josh Reed as well as a pair of transition baskets from Austin Spalding, but the Defenders still held an eight-point lead going into the fourth quarter, 51-43.

Evans continued to dominate the lane in the final period.  The 6'6" forward scored another eight points and grabbed four offensive rebounds over the smaller Marion County front line as Bryan Station won the rebound battle 54-33.  Marion County head coach Tim Peterson was pleased with his team's effort throughout the game, but was disappointed in the 4-16 shooting in the fourth quarter and his team's 25 turnovers for the game.  You can read more about this game by clicking on the score in the right hand column, or by clicking here.

Marion County returns to action this Wednesday night in the 20th District Tournament at Campbellsville High School's Paul J. Coop Memorial Gymnasium.  The Knights will face the host Eagles at 7:30 PM.
