MC Falls Short On Senior Night (2/10/2012)

Marion County senior Carlos Litsey (23) scores two of his 13 points in the Knights' loss to North Hardin.
Despite a double-double performance from Carlos Litsey, a short-handed Marion County team came up short to the North Hardin Trojans on Senior Night, 63-50. Trojan center Adam Hendrix dominated in the paint, scoring 30 points to lead all scorers in the game.
The Knights were playing without the services of sophomore forward Clay Lanham due to an injured shoulder, and sophomore center Bobby Jaglowicz. The lack of depth played a factor early as two Marion County starters, Vincent Collins and Latrelle Irvin, both picked up three fouls in the first half. Litsey held his own on the boards, collecting 11 rebounds. But no other Knight had more than four as the bigger North Hardin squad turned 16 offensive rebounds into 15 points.
The Trojans held a 15-12 lead after one quarter of play thanks to a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Jermaine Ruttley at the end of the first. Baskets by Collins and John Southall gave Marion County a 16-15 lead to start the second quarter, but North Hardin responded with a 13-0 run, capped by a Jajuan Akins dunk with 4:18 left before the half for a 28-16 lead. The Knights fought back, going on a 9-2 run of their own over the rest of the quarter to pull within 30-25 at the half.

North Hardin's Darren Martin opened the third quarter with a three-point basket to put the Trojans up by eight. The Knights answered with a field goal and pair of free-throws by Southall, followed by two scores inside from Collins to tie the game at 33-33 with 4:54 remaining in the period. After a couple of empty posessions for both teams, Irvin was whistled for his fourth foul with 2:43 left in the third. North Hardin scored on their next two posessions, and Collins was called for his fifth foul with 1:27 remaining in the period. Ruttley completed the three-point play at the line for a 40-33 lead, and Hendrix added a free-throw to complete the 8-0 run for a 41-33 lead.
Patrick Gribbins completed a three-point play just before the start of the fourth quarter, then found Litsey under the basket for a score on the next posession to pull Marion County to within three at 41-38. But Hendrix took over inthe final seven minutes, scoring 13 of his 30 points over that span as the Trojans slowly pulled away.
In addition to his 13 points and 11 rebounds, Litsey finished the game with 5 steals and 4 blocked shots in his final game at the Roby Dome. Fellow senior Southall scored 12 points and a pair of assists. Gribbins, also plaing in his last home game, added three points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Knights Host Trojans For Senior Night (2/10/2012)
Seniors John Southall, Carlos Litsey, and Patrick Gribbins will take the floor at the Roby Dome for the last home game of their careers tonight to take on the surging North Hardin Trojans on Senior Night. The Trojans have struggled for most of the season, posting a record of 3-16 prior to January 31. But the return of several previously suspended players has helped coach Ron Bevars' team go on a three-game winning streak, defeating Adair County, Central (Louisville), and DeSales.
Gribbins was the leading scorer and rebounder on the 2008-09 Freshmen Knights squad and has been a solid contributor to the varsity for two seasons, including a 14-point performance to lead Marion County over Collins High last season. Litsey is currently averaging 10.1 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, and leads the team with 33 blocked shots on the season. Litsey's 467 career rebounds currently ranks him 9th all-time for the Knights program. Southall has developed into one of the top players in the Fifth Region this season, averaging 15.8 points and 4.3 assists per game while converting 41.2% of his three-point attempts this year. He currently ranks #3 in school history in three-point field goals (139) and #15 in scoring (874). Southall is also only the fourth Marion County Knight with at least 800 points and 300 assists, along with LaBradford Harris, Marlis Scott, and Anthony Epps.
Game time for tonight is scheduled for approximately 8:00 PM, following a girls varsity game and the Senior Night ceremonies.
Tigers Surge In Second Half; Top Knights (2/7/2012)

John Southall draws a foul on Bardstown's Jordan Brewer in the Knights' loss to the Tigers.
A 22-2 run by the Bardstown Tigers midway through the second half turned a tight contest into a 70-50 win over the Marion County Knights on the Tigers' homecoming night. John Southall turned in another stellar performance for the Knights with 23 points and five assists, but it was not enough to overcome the Tigers' 33-17 advantage on the boards and 13-of-21 shooting from three-point territory.
The two teams traded blows all through the first half, the largest lead for either being six points for Bardstown late in the first quarter at 18-12. The second quarter saw four lead-changes and one tie with Southall proving almost impossible to stop for the Tigers. Meanwhile, Jordan Brewer was proving just as much of a problem for the Knights, draining his fourth three-pointer of the half to put the Tigers up 29-24. But Bardstown would commit tournovers on their last four posessions of the half and the Knights took advantage. Sophomore Latrelle Irvin scored on a drive to cut the lead to three, then drew a foul on Bardstown's Devonte Grundy and hit both free-throws to cut the lead to 29-28. Vincent Collins' basket with 1:00 left before the half put the Knights up 30-29 going into the break.
Southall's fifth three-point basket put the Knights ahead 38-34 with 4:20 left in the third quarter, but Marion County would not score another field goal for for almost seven minutes of game time while the Tigers would start raining three-point shots -- three in a row from Grundy -- to take a 56-40 lead before Alex Smith finally put an end to the run with his only basket of the game, a three-pointer from the corner to pull Marion County to within 56-43. The Knights could get no closer, however, as Bardstown's rebounding advantage provided 8 second-chance points in the final 3:30. For the game, the Tigers scored 21 points from their 17 offensive rebounds.
Latrelle Irvin scores over Bardstown's Justin Hubbard.
Irvin finished the game with 13 points for Marion County, including 9-13 at the free-throw line. Grundy led the Tigers in scoring with 22, including five three-point field goals, and Brewer scored 20 with six three-pointers. The Knights return to action Friday night at the Roby Dome when North Hardin visits on Senior Night.
Knights Face Big Test At Bardstown (2/7/2012)

Bardstown point guard Anthony Myrks drives to the basket earlier this season against Frankfort in the Autism Classic at the Roby Dome.
The Marion County Knights put their three-game winning streak on the line tonight when they travel to Bardstown High School to take on the defending 5th Region champion Tigers. Bardstown boasts the most wins in the region with a record of 19-8, and are currently ranked #1 in the region by the Litkenhous Ratings (Courier-Journal) and #2 by the Cantrall Ratings (Herald-Leader).
The Tigers advanced to the championship game of the All-A Classic two weeks ago, falling on a last-second three-point shot to Holy Cross (Covington), 52-51. Two days later, they lost 55-36 to 19th District rival Bethlehem, but returned to the win column on Friday with a 56-40 victory at Nelson County. Head coach James "Boo" Brewer's squad returns several players from the team that advanced to last year's Sweet 16, including son Jordan Brewer, fellow senior Cody Ramos, and juniors Devonte Grundy and Marcus Cosby. But the most intriguing match-up of the game could be the Tigers' Anthony Myrks going head-to-head with Marion County's John Southall, two of the top point guards in the region. Southall is averaging 19.6 points per game since the first of the year and last Friday became just the fourth Marion County Knight to record over 300 assists in his career with 10 against Nelson County.
Game time is scheduled for 7:30 PM, following Bardstown's homecoming festivities.
Collins And Southall Double Up Commanders (2/4/2012)

Marion County junior Vincent Collins (15) scores two of his career-high 18 points in the Knights' 77-49 win over Washington County.
If there was any thought the Marion County Knights would suffer a mental let-down twenty-four hours after clinching the top spot in the 20th District standings with a win at Taylor County, it was put to rest early. Vincent Collins and John Southall both posted double-doubles as the Knights grabbed a big lead early and cruised to a 77-49 win over border rival Washington County on Homecoming Night at the Roby Dome.
Collins delivered his first double-double of the season -- and second of his career -- with 10 boards and a career-high 18 points on 9-12 shooting. Six of his points came from offensive rebounds. Southall continued his string of strong performances with 12 points and 10 assists -- one shy of his career-high and two short of the school record. Southall also had five steals to lead the Knights' defensive effort.
Marion County opened the game with a 16-2 run, capped by three bombs from behind the three-point arc -- one from Southall sandwiched by two by Alex Smith. Another run of 12-2 to open the second quarter put the Knights up 36-15 with 4:20 left in the second quarter and the rout was on. The Commanders could get no closer than 14 points the rest of the game as the Knights put 10 of their 15 players in the scoring column.

(Middle) Alex Smith hits one of his four three-point baskets for Marion County. (Right) Bobby Jaglowicz (25) fights for one of his four rebounds with the Commanders' Sean Lewis.
Smith shot 4-10 from three-point territory for 12 points. Sophomore Latrelle Irvin shot 4-7 from the floor and finished with nine points, seven rebounds, and five assists for possibly his most complete game as a Knight. Carlos Litsey scored 8 points to go with his 11 boards as Marion County won the rebounding battle 46-26. The Knights also shot a blistering 53.4% from the floor for the game. Washington County was led by Alex Marshall and Thomas Pettus, who both scored 13. You can read more about this game by clicking on the score in the right-hand column, or by clicking here.
Marion County now begins a stretch of four tough games as they prepare for the district tournament, beginning Tuesday at top-ranked Bardstown. The Knights return home on Friday to face a newly revitalized North Hardin, who this week brought back five players who have missed much of the season. The following week the Knights will hit the road to John Hardin and 18th District favorite LaRue County.
Knights Topple Cards; Claim District Crown (2/3/2012)

Marion County junior Vincent Collins (15) challenges the shot of Taylor County's Quentin Goodin (3) in the Knights 67-51 win over the Cardinals.
A barrage of three-pointers in the third quarter from John Southall and Alex Smith, and a 12-2 run over the end of the third and start of the fourth quarter propelled the Marion County Knights past the Taylor County Cardinals 67-51 on Taylor County's homecoming night. More importantly, the win secured first place in the 20th District for the Knights, giving them the #1 seed in the District Tournament to be played at Taylor County February 21-25. Marion County will face #4 Campbellsville in the first round while #2 Taylor County will play #3 Adair County.
Neither the Knights nor the Cards could seem to get much traction for most of the first half until, with the Cards up 20-18, Southall picked off an errant Taylor County pass and raced to the other end. Southall scored a lay-up and drew the third foul on point guard Quentin Goodin with 1:44 left before halftime. Southall converted the free-throw, and with Goodin on the bench the Knights forced three more Cardinals turnovers to take a 27-24 lead at the break.
Taylor County started off the third quarter strong, getting a three-point basket from Trae Wells and a score off an offensive rebound from sophomore Caleb Wigginton to tie the game at 29-29. On the Knights' next posession, Smith drilled a deep three-pointer to break the tie, then following another Cardinals turnover Southall buried a three-point goal from 25 feet away. Then to top off the run, Southall drained his next shot from just inside the red vollyball court line near half-court to put Marion County up 38-29, forcing a Taylor County time-out with 4:52 left in the period.

(Left) Alex Smith scores over Taylor County's Lucas Bradshaw in the first quarter. (Middle) Latrelle Irvin gets off a shot over Brady Turpin (11) for two of his 12 points. (Right) John Southall (21) drains a long-range three-pointer to put Marion County ahead by nine points in the third quarter.
Wigginton led a surge to pull the Cards to within five points at 44-39 late in the third quarter, but the Knights began a 12-2 run that extended into the fourth quarter, including a pair of baskets each from Southall and Latrelle Irvin to go ahead 56-41. Goodin and Wells scored on back-to-back plays to pull Taylor County to within 10 points, 56-46, with 2:00 left to play. But that was as close as the Cards would get for the remainder of the game. Taylor County would get only one more field goal while the Knights converted enough free-thorws -- including 4-4 from senior Patrick Gribbins -- to secure the 16-point win.
Southall continued his string of strong performances with a game-high 27-points and seven steals to go with three assists. In the last six games, the senior guard is averaging 23.5 points and has converted 26 of 52 three-point attempts while shooting 78% at the free-throw line. Smith and Irvin were the other two Knights to score in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively, while teammate Carlos Litsey pulled down 11 boards. Wigginton led Taylor County's effort with 18 points; Wells added 15 points. You can read more about this game by clicking on the score in the right-hand column, or by clicking here.
The Knights return to action Saturday at the Roby Dome with their own Homecoming Night against Washington County. The girls' varsity game will start at 6:00 PM, followed by homecoming ceremonies. The boys' varsity game should tip off near 8:00 PM.
Knights Face Two Rivals This Weekend;
Freshmen In District Tourney (2/3/2012)
The Marion County Knights will take on two of their biggest rivals on back-to-back nights this weekend -- traveling to Taylor County on Friday night to decide first place in the 20th District, and hosting the Washington County Commanders for Homecoming Night on Saturday at the Roby Dome.
Friday's showdown with the Cardinals has post-season implications as the winner will be the 20th District's regular season champ and claim the #1 seed in the District Tournament, also to be played at Taylor County later in February. Both teams boast 4-1 district records with the Knights claiming a 59-51 victory over the Cards in their last game at Marion County on January 20. With their own Homecoming crowd in the stands, the Cards would love to return the favor in their own gym. Tip-off will take place about 8:00 PM following the conclusion of homecoming ceremonies.

Regardless of the outcome on Friday, the Knights will have to put it behind them quickly as Washington County will pay a visit to the Roby Dome on Saturday night for Marion County's homecoming game. The Commanders have struggled for most of the season, but coach Russell Burkhead's team has won back-to-back games over the last week with a 46-42 win over Metcalf County on Saturday and a 59-47 road win at Campbellsville on Tuesday. The Commanders also gave the Knights fits earlier this season at Washington County, staying within four points until Marion County pulled away late in the fourth quarter for a 57-44 win. This game will also take place at approximately 8:00 PM after homecoming ceremonies have been concluded.
In addition to the two big varsity games, the Freshmen Knights will attempt to claim the Freshmen District Tournament title Saturday morning at Taylor County High School. The #1 seed Freshmen Knights will play #4 Campbellsville at 9:30 AM. The winner of that game will face the winner of the 10:45 AM contest between #2 Adair County and #3 Taylor County. The Championship game is scheduled for 12:30 PM.
