The Falcons split their weekend home and home games with the Selkirk Fishermen. The fans in both arenas were entertained with energy-filled hockey action. On Friday in Lundar the Falcons found themselves in penalty trouble early in the game. They lost two players with checking from behind penalties and one to injury in the first period. The Falcons battled through, killing off a minor and a major penalty, and scoring a goal of their own in between. As the 5 minute major penalty ended and the Falcon player serving the penalty returned to the ice, he, David Wasylkoski, found himself on a breakaway. Wasylkoski was hauled down thus setting up the ultimate challenge between skater and goaltender, the penalty shot. With the crowd already on their feet Wasylkoski slid the puck between the feet of the Selkirk goaltender giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead. Less than a minute later, the Fishermen were assessed a penalty of their own which the Falcons capitalized on making the score 3-0. Once again on the powerplay the Falcons made the score 4-0 before the end of the first period. In the second period the Falcons added a goal to their lead while Lundar Chicken Chef Player of the Game Derrick Peitsch put on a stellar goaltending performance. The Falcons’ improved teamwork continued throughout the third, frustrating the Fishermen attack resulting in a 5-0 victory and the first shutout of the team’s short history with 50 saves by Derrick Peitsch.
Less than 24 hours later the two teams found themselves on the ice against each other once again but with the Fishermen being the hosts in Selkirk. The Fishermen took the lead with a goal at the 7:33 mark of the first period. The Falcons tied the score on the powerplay 63 seconds later and the Fishermen fans, Falcons fans, and both teams knew this was going to be an exciting game. Selkirk slowly took control of the game during the second period taking 3-1, 4-2, and a 5-2 lead shortly after the midway point of the game. The Falcons became discouraged and could have allowed Selkirk to skate away with a lopsided victory but this is not the character of the Falcon players. A determined effort and team regrouping resulted in the Falcons regaining their composure in the third period. The Falcons scored 2 goals but came up short of a dramatic comeback as they fell 6-4. Falcons will practice Monday January 30th and Wednesday February 1st in Lundar at 8 pm. The next 4 games for the Falcons will be on the road. Tuesday January 31st at the Billy Mosienko Arena against the North Winnipeg Satelites, Friday February 3rd in Fisher River against the Peguis Juniors, and Saturday February 4th and Sunday February 5th in Norway House against the North Stars.
