Success for KJHL South All Stars

The 6 Lundar Falcon KJHL South All Stars contributed to the 12-8 victory on Sunday January 22 in Arborg against the KJHL North All Stars. The five Falcon skaters had 7 points amongst them, Mike Lafreniere had 2 goals, Ryan Meadows with 2 assists, Dean Richard, Daryl Flett and Orrin Hogue each tallied an assist. Goaltender Derrick Pietsch came into the 2nd half of the game to back stop the South All Stars to a 12-8 victory. Falcon fans would be proud to know that KJHL South All Stars Coach Al Hares of the Selkirk Fishermen started Lundar’s skaters at the beginning of the game. Congratulations to all the players that participated and represented the Lundar Falcons in the 2012 KJHL All Star game.

Slow Start Grounds Falcons

Falcons were obviously caught off guard by the Norway House North Stars’ quick start during Friday night’s game in Lundar.  The Stars jumped out to an early 2-0 lead until the Falcons could settle into their own game plan which allowed the Falcons to pull within one with three minutes to go in the first period.  This score would have been accepted by the Falcons who had played quite poorly in the first but the North Stars tacked on 2 more goals in 15 seconds to make the Falcons’ troubles worse as they were now down 4-1 going into the second.  Regrouping, hard work, and creating opportunities was now a high priority for the Falcons for the remainder of the game in order to recover from possibly one of their worst periods in recent memory. After some excellent goal tending by Falcons’ netminder Derrick Peitsch and improved play by his team the Falcons and the North Stars played a scoreless second period.  The Falcons needed 3 goals to tie during the third and 3 goals is what they got but they never could pull even with the North Stars as Norway House scored 2 of their own making the final score 6-4. The Falcons recorded 20 shots in the third period including a fine defensive play by Lundar Chicken Chef Player of the Game Dylan Bennett, but the whole the Falcons dug for themselves in the first was far too deep to climb out of.  Falcons will now practice Monday January 23rd and Wednesday January 25th at 8 p.m. in Lundar to prepare for back-to-back games against the Selkirk Fishermen Friday January 27th at 8 p.m. in Lundar and Saturday January 28th at 7:30 p.m. in Selkirk.  All Falcon fans are invited to come out to the KJHL All-Star Game and Skills Competition in Arborg at 2 p.m. on Sunday January 22nd to support our 6 Falcons named to the South All-Star Team.  The players include: Captain Orrin Hogue, Assistant Captains Michael Lafreniere and Ryan Meadows, Goaltender Derrick Peitsch, and Forwards Dean Richard and Darryl Flett.  Congratulations!

Offensive Explosion

Tuesday night’s road game to St. Malo was a cold trip for the Falcons but their energy and speed quickly heated up their offensive attack against the Warriors. The Falcons jumped out to an early 3 goal, 4-1 lead in the first ten minutes of the game. These three goal cushions were short-lived though as St. Malo was not to be outdone by the Falcons, as they scored 3 more of their own before the end of the first. The Falcons were able to hang on to a 5-4 lead before the second. Any worry of the Falcons losing another close, one goal game vanished as the Falcons powered through the second period scoring 6 goals to take an 11-4 lead going into the third period. The teams traded 2 goals in the third to make the final score 13-6. Falcons were led by Michael Lafreniere who registered a seven point night as well as Jacob Klick-McMahon who tallied 5 assists. Falcons will practice Wednesday January 18th at 8 p.m. in Lundar in order to prepare for their next home game against Norway House on Friday January 20th at 8 p.m.

ONLY BY ONE...AGAIN...TWICE

On the latest home stand by the Falcons they dropped 2 exciting, well-played one goal games, 5-4 to the Arborg Ice Dawgs, and 6-5 to the North Winnipeg Satelites. On Wednesday night against Arborg the Falcons had 2 nothing, 3 nothing, and 4-3 leads and appeared to be in fairly decent shape to skate away with the victory. Penalty trouble in the 3rd period by the Falcons allowed the Ice Dawgs to build momentum. With 2 power play goals and a total of 4 goals in just under 4 minutes halfway through the 3rd was how Arborg was able to bring down the Falcons. A glimmer of hope for the Falcons appeared when Lundar Chicken Chef player of the Game Nick Bennett broke a 3-3 tie with just over 11 minutes to go in the game when he scored on a breakaway. On Friday night against North Winnipeg the Falcons jumped out to an early 1-0 lead 2 minutes into the game. Outshooting North Winnipeg was not the problem in the 1st for the Falcons. That they did but found themselves down 3-1. Both teams played fairly well defensively, reducing the average shots against by about 15 each. The Falcons were able to pull within 1 goal on three different occasions but were never able to get the equalizer. Early in the 3rd Lundar Chicken Chef Player of the Game Brady Ingenmey scored his second of 3 goals on the night to narrow the score to 5-4. The teams traded goals during the remainder of the period and Winnipeg skated away with a hard fought 6-5 victory, dropping the Falcons' record to 9-16-1. The Falcons will practice Monday, January 16th and Wednesday, January 18th in Lundar at 8 p.m. They will have a game between these dates as they travel to St. Malo to play the Warriors, who sit just ahead of the Falcons in the standings. The game is Tuesday, January 17th at 8 p.m. in St. Malo. The next home game for the Falcons will be Friday, January 20th at 8 p.m. against the Norway House North Stars.

No Points for Great Effort in Showcase Weekend

The Falcons came with no points in their 2 games on the weekend during KJHL Showcase Weekend in Gimli. Arborg Ice Dawgs beat the Falcons 3-0 with both teams having outstanding goaltending. The Falcons went down by 3 early into the 2nd and maintained a consistent attack but could not score on their 33 shots and numerous missed opportunities. Against the Selkirk Fishermen, the Falcons had outstanding goaltending once again by Derrick Peitsch and improved defensive play throughout most of the game. The Falcons scored 2 power play goals to take a two goal lead going into the 2nd. Exciting end to end action continued again in the 2nd period with the Falcons missing on 2 break aways and the Fishermen pulling within 1 on their own man advantage. The score remained 2-1, the Falcons went ahead by 2 goals with just under 8 minutes to go. With the Falcons having 49 shots on goal and many near misses this 2 goal was not to be enough. The Fishermen scored 3 goals in just over 3 minutes going ahead 4-3 with 2:27 to left. With the goaltender pulled, and face-offs in the Selkirk zone the Falcons were unable to get the equalizer. The Falcons came away empty handed this weekend but should hold their heads high as their continued hard work and improvement will pay off. The Falcons will practice Monday January 9 in Lundar at 8 P.M. in preparation for two upcoming games at 8 P.M. in Lundar Wednesday January 11 against Arborg and Friday January 13 against Winnipeg. Lundar Falcons had 5 players named to the KJHL All-Star game being held in Arborg on January 22 at 1:30 P.M. Congratulations to Michael Lafreniere, Dean Richard, Darryl Flett, Ryan Meadows and Orrin Hogue.

Team Victory

Falcon players have been working hard toward playing a complete team game. Players are developing confidence with each other through communication during and in between play. This had become more evident on Wednesday night’s game against the league leading Norway House North Stars. A commitment to playing two-way hockey for any team in the KJHL is important in order to be successful as the standings from first place to last place in the league is a mere 13 points. In a close, well played first period it was the Falcons that jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a power play goal. The North Stars tied the game 3 minutes later only to fall behind once again with just under 4 minutes left to play in the first. The Falcons scored early in the second and again at the 10 minute mark to go ahead 4-1. Penalty trouble would slow down the Falcons’ attack as they took 7 of 10 minor penalties in the game. The North Stars were slowly turning the tables on the Falcons and had tied the game at 4 with a power play goal with 1:39 left in the second. With the score tied at 4 entering the third the Falcons needed to concentrate on defending their zone while developing offensive chances when in control of the puck in the offensive zone. And not to disappoint their fans the Falcons worked hard to score on 3 goals in a 2 minute and 7 second span before the period was half over. This also included a short-handed goal to make the score 7-4. The North Stars were not to be outdone as they battled back with 2 goals of their own in 28 seconds apart with just over 9 minutes to go in the game. This resulted with the Falcons taking a time out to regroup. Short, responsible shifts and killing yet another penalty the Falcons were able to keep Norway House from scoring. Hard work paid off for the Falcons as they scored an insurance goal with just over 4 and half minutes to go in the game. The Falcons and their fans can be proud of their 8-6 victory with full understanding of how dedicated and responsible players have to be in a hard fought sixty minute game. Lundar Chicken Chef Player of the game Bryce Sliworsky, with 1 goal and 1 assist, along with all of his teammates displayed great enthusiasm and excitement as they left the ice at the end of the game. With this victory and strong effort the team now breaks for Christmas to go home and visit family. The Falcons will continue to remain skating throughout the break and rejoin Wednesday January 4th at 8 pm in Lundar for practice in preparation for KJHL showcase in Gimli. Falcons games in Gimli include Arborg Ice Dawgs Thursday January 5th at 8 pm, and Selkirk Fishermen Sunday January 8th at 4 pm. Merry Christmas to all and have a safe holiday season.

The Lundar Falcons Jr. B. Hockey Team would like to extend their condolences to the Danielson Family on the passing of Margaret Danielson, founding Board Member and Treasurer

Posted Dec 18/11 - Accountability Displays Growth
Sunday morning the Falcons awoke to find themselves 15 points behind the 1st place Norway House North Stars. Not only a strong offensive showing would be needed in order to beat Norway House, but also executing a steadily improving defensive team plan. The Falcons began quickly by jumping out to a 2-0 lead 7 minutes into the game. Norway House pulled within 1 only to have the Falcons restore their 2 goal lead before the end of the first. The North Stars scored on an early power play in the second and tied the score at 3 seconds after the midway point in the game. The Falcons maintained their discipline and kept their emotions under control to positively encourage and support each other. Thirty seconds later the Falcons went ahead and found themselves entering the third ahead 4-3. End to end action was what the Norway House fans had in store for themselves to enjoy as the teams combined for 28 shots. With just over 10 minutes left in the game the Falcons got an insurance goal and capped the victory with an empty net goal with just over a minute left to play. Accountability for team play resulted in a 6-3 victory for the Falcons. Four goals and one assist for Michael Lafreniere, outstanding goaltending by Derrick Peitsch, and three points from both Orrin Hogue and Chad Bodie combined excellently with the whole teams’ commitment to assisting each other in defensive play made the Falcons victorious. The team will return home in the early morning hours of Monday December 19th and practicing at 8 P.M. at Lundar Arena. The Falcons final game before a Christmas break will be in Lundar at 8 P.M. Wednesday December 21st against the same Norway House North Stars. Thank you to all of those who prepared and provided food and drinks for the Falcons bus ride to Norway House. It is rumored that the coach will be sporting a new hairdo styled by Falcon players in celebration of their latest victory.
