Lasers Defeat North, Win Regional Title
The Kettle Moraine Lasers (21-9) closed out their home season with a regional championship. KM defeated a much-improved and pesky Waukesha North team 8-2 on Tuesday at Wales Community Park to advance to the Sectional on Friday. The Lasers got on the board first in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Dalton Grove led off with a single and then walks to Cody Smith and Fred Gromalak loaded the bases for David Galando. Galando sent a sac fly to LF to give KM the early 1-0 lead. North tied the game in the second on a fielding error by the Lasers. Tyler Hurdis led off with a single and after a sac bunt, a miscommunication on a swining bunt led to a throwing error that tied the score at 1-1. The Northstars took their only lead in the third when Brian Pate dropped down a beautiful bunt for a leadoff single and was sacrificed to second. After a groundout, John Dobson came through with a clutch two-out RBI single to make it 2-1 North. The Lasers took back the lead for good in the third, once again started by Grove. Grove was hit by a pitch and was sacrificed to second by Cody Smith. Casey Casper quickly tied the score with a single back through the middle to score Grove. After a walk to Gromalak, and a popout, Senior Kyle Calhoun came through with a two-out opposite field double that scored Casper and Gromalak and made it 4-2 Lasers. KM pulled away in the fifth with four runs. Gromalak walked to lead off and was sacrificed to second, Calhoun singled for his third hit of the day to give KM runners at the corners. Paul Trupke snuck a single in the hole for an RBI single that made it 5-2. Aaron Keniski added an RBI single, before Dalton Grove connected for his third hit of the day scoring two more and making it 8-2. Grove finshed the day 3-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Kyle Calhoun finished his big day 3-4 with two RBI. Cody Smith got the victory by allowing just one earned run in six innings. Dalton Grove pitched the seventh to seal the victory. KM advances to the sectional on Friday at Waukesha West at 11AM against Whitnall. The Falcons advanced by defeating Muskego 6-5. If KM can get past Whitnall, they will play at 7PM Friday to go to the State Tournament
