It's here!!!

Thanks to everyone for a great FallBall Season 3.  Thank you to the Roughriders for the game tickets, our sponsors, our super guest instructors which included Brandon's instructors and our terrific volunteer coaches.  Great baseball and the appearances and contributions by both MLB scouts Dennis Mitchell (Cincinnati Reds) and Harold Debert (Colorado Rockies) made for an exciting season. Congratulations to all our players and to Tyler Folk of Regina for being identified as a player of interest to the Cincinnati Reds! See you next Fallball season. Click on Story2008 for a nice article on FallBall by the LeaderPost.

Week #5

Here is Dennis Mitchell's (Cincinnati) comments on Fallball followed by Sask. Roughrider news. Also FallBall would like to confirm Colorado Rockie scout Harold Debert will be instructing and available for questions this coming weekend.

I would like to thank all the people involved in Fall Ball for their hospitality extended to me on Sept 20-21 in Regina.
I was very impressed with the number of players who attended and with the number of teams in varying age groups which I had a chance to see. . I have always felt that kids need to be outside in the summer and fall, playing baseball , football or doing anything active . I am not a fan of kids being stuck in a rink from late August to late April.
I actually gave out some information sheets to 3 players and have another 12 names from the bantams I watched. These players will be monitored through their midget years by myself or some of the part time people who work for me in Western Canada. I only gave out 4 info sheets during the North Dakota Legion Championships so the caliber of Fall Ball was very high.
While I normally have my part time people in Western Canada check out Bantam and Peewee Players, it was great to be able to see these kids myself. I will be back future years to check out FALL BALL and will be mentioning the program to other scouts who are in my area.
To the kids in Fall Ball, work hard but have fun too. Baseball is a wonderful opportunity. It can pay for school, allow you to travel and be a part of a great baseball community. To the organizers and coaches, thank you.
Dennis Mitchell
Cincinnati Reds

RiderPride is being felt with FallBall's Brandon members! The CFL's Saskatchewan Roughriders has provided game tickets for Friday's game to our FallBall Brandon contingent. Fallball wishes a good time to all attending the game and of course a Rider victory!

Week #4

A weekend of what I call Texas Baseball....nice temperature but windy...whew! Great Baseball again and I did see a great homerun in the Bantam game that was just a rope to rightfield. The news for our final weekend of FallBall is we may have another MLB scout out to not only watch the kids but to answer questions that you may have on skill development and college ball. I hope to confirm by midweek!!

Park news is that all diamonds have recieved a fresh facelift of Red Shale which will be great for all our games as we wrap up FallBall 2008 this weekend.

Another great day of baseball and solid play but a big surprise was the appearance of Cincinnati Reds Scout Dennis Mitchell. Dennis spent the day watching FallBall and enjoying the quality of skill on display. Look for his comments in the next day or so.

Awesome instruction once again by our FallBall instructors and Triple Crown instructors from Brandon who provided a ton of quality instruction for the young players. Wow !

Week 2

Mostly blue sky and 18 degrees made for a pretty good afternoon of baseball weather today. Great baseball today with local bragging rights on the line. Bantam Grey came up with a nice win today and some awesome defense by a young short stop from Yorkton, This kid is one to watch...what defensive range! Looks like all teams from rookie on up had a great afternoon of fun. Next week we look to having a great group of instructors included in that group a couple of current professional players! Brandon is back for week 3 so look for a full park and plenty of great baseball action. See you next week!

Week 1

Going through the archives of last year I was talking about 24-25 celcius temperatures....well we were a little short of that for week #1 but saw outstanding performances and the debut of Brandon Manitoba Bantams and Peewee teams. We also saw the debut of our new rookie division.

Just great to see Lions Park full and great baseball going on. Week #2 will be an off week for Brandon and that means bragging rights will be up for grabs between the Regina teams. Our guest instructors were once again impressive and we look forward to seeing them next weekend as well.

Confirmed Instructors to date Week 1;

Long trek for Fall Ball
By ROB VANSTONE
Leader-Post
Oct.6/07

The long drives of Taylor Madsen and Frits Horback are not restricted to the baseball diamond.

On each of the past four Saturdays, Madsen and Horback have been driven to Saskatchewan from their Manitoba homes to take part in Baseball Regina’s Fall Ball Baseball League. The instructional league’s final session is slated for today, weather permitting, at Lions Park.

“It’s for the love of the game,’’ said Nicole Madsen, Taylor’s mother. “We’re having lots of fun.’’

Madsen, 13, is from Hamiota, Man., which is 100 kilometres northwest of Brandon. Horback, 12, hails from Minnedosa, which is 75 kilometres north of Brandon.

Each Saturday morning, Horback, his seven-year-old sister (Angel) and his mother (Kathy) have driven one hour to Hamiota, picked up the Madsen travelling party, and motored three more hours to Regina. They usually return home the same day, as midnight nears.

“The driving isn’t too bad,’’ said Nicole Madsen, who customarily makes the trip with Taylor and his 10-year-old sister, Shailyn. “We have lots to chit-chat about. The time goes by pretty quickly. The kids watch movies.’’

The Fall Ball Baseball League offers players guest instruction along with games in the mosquito, bantam and pee wee age divisions. The instructors are veteran Regina coaches and some of the Queen City’s most-accomplished young players (such as members of the Regina Red Sox and college players). The program is also constructive as far as mentorship of umpires.

Fall Ball attracted Madsen and Horback — and roughly 100 other players — even though the Manitobans could have stayed in their home province.

“There is a league in Winnipeg, but it’s a lot more expensive,’’ Nicole Madsen noted. “They require two nights a week plus one day on the weekend. We had already signed up for Regina when we found out about Winnipeg, but this is a lot more convenient for us. We’re three hours away from Winnipeg and three hours away from Regina.’’
And further away from summer every day.

“This just gives them some extra ballplaying,’’ Nicole Madsen explained. “Most kids, if they don’t go to provincials, wrap up early in July. If you’re fortunate enough to make the AAA team, you’re playing until the end of July.

“This gives them different skills and an opportunity to meet different coaches and players. They seem to be having fun at it.’’

The welcoming nature of Regina’s baseball community has helped matters.

“The parents in Regina are kind of shocked that we’d travel that distance, but they’ve been very friendly and nice to talk to,’’ Nicole said.
The Manitobans have been so impressed that they want to try it again.

“This is only their second year of doing this (program), but I can see it’s going to be a big drawing feature,’’ Nicole said. “We’re talking about coming back next year or sending a whole team to do it.

“I think it’s a real benefit to the kids to build their skills. The boys are really enjoying having people like Mitch MacDonald (a Regina-born Florida Marlins draftee) and Morgan Reiter (of the Inside Pitch) do instruction before the game.”

WoW! Another awesome day for FallBall. The weather and baseball has been tremendous! The Peewees went to battle today with 2 games ending in a tie and all divisions once again had outstanding instruction from outstanding guest coaches. Thank you to the anonymous umpire who donated 4 Pats Hockey tickets. Two Peewee and two Bantam players were the lucky and happy recipients.

Another outstanding group of guest coaches that include Regina Redsox players, Sask Select coaches, Morgan Reiter of Inside Pitch, and Ben Vaniderstine an 8 year Pro with the MLB Milwaukee Brewer System.

An outstanding Week 2 to the 2007 Season!
Hows does 24 degrees celcius sound? Music to everyones' ears as the weather was fantastic and the baseball equally entertaining.

Next week we can expect a full turn out of guest instructors including (we hope) MLB Pittsburg Pirate prospect Dustin Molleken who spent this past season with Hickory of Class A Atlantic League and Morgan Reiter of InSide Pitch fame. Morgan Reiter had a comeback season this summer with the Regina RedSox of the Western Major Baseball League and did nothing but impress everyone with his pitching prowess. Congratulations Morgan!

An outstanding Opening Day to the 2007 Season!

Day 1 saw outstanding baseball and nice weather as 7 ball teams took to the field. Homeruns at the Bantam level and great defense at all levels were the days' highlites. Again the roar of the crowds, particularly in the Mosquito division play created a terrific atmosphere for the days' games.

FallBall is extremely proud of the quality of instructors who give there time to the young ball players and the quality of officiating. The mentorship program for young umps has been a resounding success and the return to Lions park during his offseason by MLB umpire Stu Scheurwater is testament to the quality of people involved!

Guest instructors included Mitch MacDonald a first year player with the Florida Marlins Organization, Ron Knaus, Barry Erickson, Brad Pense, Dave Peters. All of these guest coaches are experienced coaches with the Prairie Midget AAA League and Sask Selects.

See you all next week!!!

Welcome to the 2007 Season!
