Our 2012 AGM is set for March 13 at 7:30 PM!

The meeting will be held at the Elmwood Legion, 920 Nairn Avenue. If you have an interest in helping make the Giants successful on or off the field, this will be your opportunity to get to know the Executive and many of our Directors. It is also a great way to get to know how the Club works.

All interested in attending are invited to call or e-mail a member of our Executive for more details. Information useful in making those connections is available in our "CONTACTS" section.

Members of the Executive and our Directors are reminded there will be a pre-AGM planning meeting at the same location at 7:30 PM on February 21.

Posted Jan 29/12 - 2012 Rosters to be filled

The Club is accepting expressions of interest from players wanting to play with any of our teams in the upcoming season.

Every season, the Club sets out to build the best teams possible. Every off-season, the directors, alumni and friends are looking to identify the best new prospects available in the age categories covered by our teams. This year is no exception!

We are already aware of several new recruits for the Junior AAA and AA teams and have expectations the two Senior teams will build on their most recent successes as they also recruit new talent.

Team organizers are ready and willing to receive all expressions of interest in playing for any of the three teams. If you want to be informed when the training camps and tryouts open, then get in touch with the following people:

Juniors (Manager): Al Kinley, 339-9603 or via e-mail

Senior Giants (Organizer): Mark Bullion, 261-9401 or via e-mail

Mudcats (Organizer): Mike Zurba, 799-7862 or via e-mail

Mudcats (Organizer): Chris Leclerc, via e-mail

We look forward to hearing from you, thank you in advance for your interest and wish everyone every success in the 2012 baseball season!

Posted Jan 29/12 - Marc Babaluk to Coach Team Manitoba in the 2013 Canada Summer Games

Our Junior AAA Head Coach, Marc Babaluk, has been selected to be the Head Coach of Team Manitoba in the 2013 Canada Summer Games to held in Sherbrooke, QC from August 2 to August 17.

As details become available, you will find more information about this prestigious competition on the Baseball page of the Sherbrooke2013 web site.

The competition will take place in three local or nearby venues:

  • Parc de l'est (Magog)
  • Parc Laurence (Coaticook)
  • Amédée-Roy Stadium (Sherbrooke)

More details about these sites will be posted nearer to the start of the games.

The members of the Club Executive join the entire Giants family in congratulating Marc for this well-deserved recognition and we wish him well in his efforts to bring back some metal!

Posted Jan 29/12 - 2012 Junior AA and AAA Teams - Looking for Coaches

The Club is looking to build on the success of its Junior teams in 2011. One important component of that success will be the coaching lineup.

Marc Babaluk, who stepped up to be the Head Coach last season is expected to return in that role. He will be joined on the coaching staff by his former team mate Mark Galang. Marc's availability throughout the season will be compromised by other baseball commitments. He has been selected to be the Head Coach of Team Manitoba in the 2013 Canada Summer Games.

Al Kinley may step up (once again!) to act as Manager of the 2012 edition of the Elmwood Giants Junior AAA team. We will have more news on that subject closer to the opening of the MJBL baseball season.

Paul Lagimodière will return as statistician and bench coach for both Junior squads and is expected to pitch in as well with the Senior teams.

The Club is searching for Assistant Coaches for the Junior AAA team and will entertain expressions of interest in these roles for the upcoming season.

With the addition of the Junior AA team to the Club's operations last year, another element was put in place to assure the development of young talent for our Junior AAA and Senior teams. This also provides another opportunity for young players to gain experience playing against some of the better players in or above their age category.

The Club is open to consideration of all offers to coach this squad as they seek to build on the success they achieved in their first season of operation in 2011. It is also a way for coaches seeking to move up to the older AAA categories to get some experience in a league with a limited schedule.

You can let us know of your offer through any of the Club Directors named on our "CONTACTS" section.

The Club Executive join the entire Giants family in congratulating Marc on achieving this well-deserved recognition.

During the MJBL Awards luncheon held on December 22, Darryl was recognized as one of the League's top outfielders.

During the 2011 regular season, Ellis played in 23 games. His defence was outstanding. On offence, he accumulated 83 plate appearances, 63 official at bats, 19 hits (with 3 doubles, a triple and 2 home runs!), added 4 stolen bases while providing production through 13 runs batted in and 11 runs scored. His .302 batting average, .460 slugging percentage, .463 on base percentage and .924 on base plus slugging percentage were notable in all categories for regular MJBL players.

--- 2010 MJBL Pennant Winners ---

The team finished the 2010 season with a 23 and 7 record, having been in first place from the first week. They led the League in per game runs against. An analysis of the final season statistics also found the team and individual players leading the League in several other categories.

They closed the season on a down note, however. They lost 3 of their last 4 games, dropping two to St Boniface, who finished in third and one to Pembina Valley, who finished in second. In fact, PV also finished with only 7 losses on the year. They were unable to earn first place honours, however, due to two unplayed games.

A final version of our 2010 Season Schedule with all regular season game results and the final League standings is available in our "HANDOUTS" section.

Coach Marc Babaluk has provided a complete 2010 Season Summary that includes a synopsis of the team's playoff performance and their win at the 2010 WCBA Junior AAA Championships. You will find it in our "HANDOUTS" section.

--- Anniversaries ---

2011 marks the 50th anniversary of the 1961 Junior Championship won by members of a Elmwood Giants “team” that was inducted to the Manitoba Baseball hall of Fame in 2008 in the “Special Teams” category.

Elmwood Giant Juniors 1961 Press Clippings
Elmwood Giant Juniors 1957-61

The 1961 championship roster consisted of:

Bob Audette (1B, P)
Ron Benson (C, OF)
Glen Corne (P)
Mac Gordon (P. OF)
Clint Hoskins (SS)
Ken Ingram (C)
Gerry Kruk (P)
Brian Maxwell (2B)
Bill McLennan (3B)
Norm Rogoski (P, OF)
Jack Shuba (OF)
Ray Shuel (OF)
Doug Smith (OF)
Tom Trosky (2B, P)
Gary White (3B)
Denny Halford (Coach)
Ray Hoskins (Coach)
Bob Smith (Coach)
George Tilbury (Manager)
Bob Leseperance (Trainer)

The nucleus of this team was a part of a great Elmwood-based minor baseball program in the early 1950's that included two bantam, two midget and two juvenile Provincial Championships.

The 1957-61 group appeared in five consecutive Junior finals winning three championships. In 1957 they lost a best of seven final in the last game to the squad from Columbus Club. In 1958 and 1959 they defeated CUAC while in 1960 they lost the final, once again to Columbus Club. They then went on to defeat Isaac Brock in 1961.

Over this period they often joined with the Elmwood Seniors and won numerous tournaments. To be accepted into them, the combined team often had to enter under a false name such as “Rathwell”.

You are welcome to learn more about them on the "Special Teams page of the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame web site.

--- 2011 Fund Raisers ---

Planning for this year's Cash Calendar Raffle is underway! More news will follow as the tickets become available.

The Club will host its 2011 "Bud, Spud and Steak" in support of the teams it operates on a Saturday on June 11 at the Canad Inns mybar Nightclub, Regent and Plessis. Everyone is welcome! Tickets will cost $20 and we thank you in advance for your continued support to the Club!

The Club expects to be involved in more Baseball Manitoba Bingos throughout the year. Watch our web sites for your next opportunity to help make the Giants baseball program a success!

--- 2011 Provincials, Nationals and Westerns ---

Every year, the Giants organization prepares itself to sponsor the participation of all our teams in regional and national competitions. With the exception of having a spot as the host, those places must be earned. While the Giants have hosted Westerns on occasion, through the years, the Giants teams have earned their way to both events on a very regular basis.

The Western Canada Baseball Association has decided the 2011 Junior Westerns will take place in Manitoba over the weekend of August 11 to 14. The final format is yet to be determined, but last year's event in which Manitoba and Saskatchewan each fielded three teams in the Round Robin phase of the tournament was considered by all to be a great success. The top two teams in the standings after those games will play for the Gold Medals. Other details will be forthcoming and posted here when available.

This year, the Club has once again offered to host the event at Giants Field! Come out to watch some of the best baseball in Western Canada!

Baseball Canada awarded the 2011 Junior Nationals to Windsor, ON. The MJBL sent an All-Star team to this competition in 2010. Our Junors were well-represented, with no fewer than 8 players making the trip and ninth slected erly but unable to attend due to a late injury. We expect the MJBL to announce soon its format for participation in this event for the current season.

The Senior Giants won the Manitoba Senior AA All-Star Provincial Championships at Giants Field in July, 2010. As a result, they will represent Manitoba at the Western Seniors in Trail, BC over the weekend of August 12 through 15. Watch their web site for more details.

In addition to regular season fixtures for the RRV Pioneers of the WABA Midget AAA League, Giants Field is often the venue for high-calibre Midget events at the Provinical level. We await further word on where this event will be held in 2011. The dates are August 5 through 7.

We will keep you updated, so stay tuned!

The Winter 2011 (March) edition of the Elmwood Giants Baseball Club Alumni and Friends newsletter is now available. Copies have been mailed to some of our known family members. It is also available in our "HANDOUTS" section.

Our "MYSTERIES" page contains details about the mysteries we have published to date. Please help us complete the puzzles!

If you have any suggestions for newsletter content or you want to be on the mailing list (electronic or hard copy!), contact Gord Menzies at 257-3553 or via e-mail.

--- Baseball Manitoba Bingos ---

Baseball Manitoba is assigned some Bingo's every year at the Manitoba Lotteries Casinos as fund raising events. Each of them is awarded to a team or club who provide volunteers as card sellers for the night. That organization earns valuable funds for use in providing players with the opportunity to play baseball. For the past several years, the Elmwood Giants Baseball Club has earned valuable funds from these events and continues to support Baseball Manitoba and our teams in this way.

The Club helped out with several Bingos last year. Once again, the Giants want to acknowledge the contributions of the many volunteers who came out to help.

Anyone willing to volunteer for future events is asked to contact Bryan Hodgson at 668-3317.

--- Giants Wear For Sale ---

The Club has for sale a collection of outerwear, T-shirts, caps and other items bearing the Elmwood Giants and Kildonan Mudcats logos. All inquiries should be directed to Al Kinley whose e-mail and phone number are available on our "CONTACTS" page.

--- Buying a car? ---

Thanks to Elmwood Giants Director Glen Hunter, if you buy a car through a Birchwood Auto Group dealership, present a voucher from the Giants and Birchwood will donate $100 to the Elmwood organization. Contact Gord Menzies at 257-3553 for vouchers.

--- News from Manitoba Baseball's Governing Bodies ---

The Club Executive encourage the Giants family to keep up with developments led by the bodies governing baseball and sport in Manitoba. News can be found on their web sites.

The most recent Baseball Manitoba newsletter can be found here. Sport Manitoba's web site offers regular news updates right on their home page!

--- 2010 Cash Calendar Raffle Final Results ---

Once again, Domino's Pizza teamed up with the Elmwood Giants organization as the major sponsor for last year’s Cash Calendar fundraiser. The calendars sold for $10 each and include five great coupon deals from Domino's worth more than the price of the ticket. Every day in November, we drew a name for a cash prize, including the grand prize of $1000 drawn on November 30!

We provided a news item daily (see above) with the day's winner. You will also find a complete list of all last year's winners in our "HANDOUTS" section.

Each year, calendars will be available from Giants players, friends and alumni. We thank everyone who purchased one (or more!) last year for your support in making our biggest fundraiser a success!

Thank you again for the opportunity to continue to make a difference in our community through sport!

--- Club Archives ---

The present Elmwood Giants organization takes great pride in upholding the tradition set out for it by all the people who have preceded us in providing a quality baseball experience for so many young players. A part of that tradition and a meaningful way of keeping the tradition alive is the maintenance of extensive club archives.

Last year, some of that material was turned into a computer-based slide presentation that played during the club's "Bud, Spud and Steak" fund raiser as well as during the President's Reception. We hope to have an updated version to share at this year's event. To be able to continue to keep the archives current, the club needs your help.

If you have pictures, newspaper articles, uniforms or other materials that could be of interest to Giants supporters and alumni, please get in touch with a Board member and let us know how you can contribute.

Right now, we are looking for pictures of the 2009 and 2010 teams and players. If you have some, please contact the Webmaster and we can make arrangements to ensure they are added to the archives.

The club also has some mysteries to solve. We will be posting pictures of teams and players we are unable to identify. If you can help, your assistance will be appreciated. Watch this space for more news in upcoming weeks.

--- Sponsorship Opportunities ---

The Club executive is always looking to increase revenues through sponsorship. There are many ways in which we deliver our sponsors message to the players, coaches, fans, executive, alumni and friends of the Club. If you are interested in taking advantage of these opportunities, please contact Dave Kodak or any other Director.

The Club also expects that the new scoreboard (see above) will offer new avenues for sponsorship. This could be your opportunity to get in on the ground floor!
