Beaver Dam Post #146 American Legion/White Construction baseball team improved to 2-0 in the AA American Legion State Tournament hosted by Tomah.
Post #146 defeated River Falls 7-3 in the 2nd day of the tournament. Tony Schmitt threw 6 1/3 innings, striking out 1, and scattering 9 hits. AJ Riehbrandt came on in the bottom of the 7th to notch 2 outs and secure the save.
Beaver Dam got key contributions from a slew of players. With two outs in the top of the second, Ian Czarneski singled and stole 2nd. Jack Wiersma worked the count full before singling Czarneski in from 2nd. Bryce Schmitt followed with another single, scoring Wiersma and pushing the BD lead to 2-0.

Halling, who homered in the 5th, then flew out to Shelton in center field. JP Feyereich was then hit by pitch and Colin Pecheck walked to load the bases with 1 out. AJ Riehbrandt came on to relieve Schmitt and got Zac Balsiger to ground into a fielder's choice and designated hitter Alex Call then flew out to deep center field for the final out of the game.

BD Legion Hammers Waunakee for return trip to state

WAUPUN – Beaver Dam’s American Legion baseball team will get another opportunity one year after a golden one slipped away.
Post 146, ranked first in Class AA, picked up its 22nd regional championship in convincing fashion with Monday’s 13-3 bashing of Waunakee at Waupun’s Schlieve Field. Next up is Antigo Friday morning at 10 to open the state tournament at Senz Field in Tomah.
“It’s been ourNo. 1 goal all year,” BD second baseman Nick Schmitt said. “Most of us were here last year and know what it takes.
“Hopefully we’ll win it this year.”
Beaver Dam took out top-ranked Kimberly in an 8-2 opener only to lose one run games to Holmen (6-5) and Merrill (7-6) afterward. It’s been on the minds of Post 146 ever since.
“We’re excited to get back,” BD catcher Trent Diekvoss said. “Last year we came against Kimberly, the top-ranked team in the state, and were hot. Then we laid an egg against two other teams we were probably better than.”
If Schmitt and Diekvoss keep hitting the way they did in Waupun, eggs won’t be a concern. Schmitt’s grand slam highlighted a seven-run second inning that put the game away early as he finished with five RBIs.
“The wind was blowing out pretty good,” Schmitt said. “I wanted to put something in the air so it would carry good and that’s what happened.”
Schmitt is 5-for-9 in his last three games but Diekvoss has been even more lethal. He capped a 7-for-12 regional with four extra-base hits and five RBIs by hitting two doubles in the finale.
“Coming into the tournament I was kind of struggling,” Diekvoss said. “Me…and a couple other guys went to the cage and started hitting 100 balls a day for two weeks straight.
“It kind of helped me out a lot and it showed in the tournament.”
Waunakee starter Mark Siehoff kept working the inside of the plate despite a stiff breeze blowing out to left field.
Two batters after Schmitt’s slam, A.J. Riehbrandt cracked a two-run shot to left that ended Siehoff’s outing.
“The homers got us going,” BD coach Joe Loizzo said. “The grand slam gave us a little room for Bryce (Schmitt) to eat up innings.”
Schmitt went the distance to pick up the win and struck out four. He was in the clear when Post 146 piled on four runs in the third inning, including doubles from Tony Schmitt, Diekvoss and Matt Sabel.
BD ended the game in the fifth when R.J. Shelton drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk. Post 146 executed well again offensively for the second straight game, putting down three sacrifice bunts and another that went for a hit.
Now the only question is whether BD can sustain their level of play next weekend.
