Reminder -- NO DIGGING! The clay bricks are outstanding, keeping things flat, but it helps if people who are habitual diggers drop that nasty habit. Thanks for the cooperation.
After games, place tarps on mound/plate, remove bases, tidy up dugouts, and lock up. No raking/tamping required, except after weekend games.
BRICK WORK COMPLETED
Thanks to Lorne Martin and his mini-ex, Wally Foster, Bucky Schmidt, Paul Wilson, Perry Scott and Zach, who carted about 200 bricks in a wheel-barrow all on his own... the clay bricks are now installed in the batters' boxes, catcher's box, and mound at Citizen Field. Photos are now uploaded shortly so everyone can see what's under the shale, about a half-inch, to keep things level. No point in digging in those areas anymore.

TIGERS WIN 2007 PLAYOFF CHAMPIONSHIP
Story courtesy the Prince George Citizen

by JASON PETERS
Citizen staff
Angelo Desantis finally got the pitch he was looking for. He ripped it for a two-run home run and gave the Shallard and Shallard Tigers a lead they would not relinquish.
The blast by Desantis was the pivotal moment in Monday night’s deciding game of the P.G. Senior Baseball League playoff championship series. The homer, which cleared the Green Monster in left field, pushed the Tigers into a 3-2 advantage over the Westwood Sports Pub Royals. By the end of the night, in front of about 250 fans at Prince George Citizen Field, the Tigers had a 6-2 victory and a series win in the maximum five games.
The Desantis bomb, off Royals pitcher Jason Cage, came with two outs in the top of the fifth inning.
“It was a curveball — he just kind of left it over the plate,” said the 24-year-old Desantis, who was later named the top batter and most valuable player of the playoffs. “He was getting me all night with outside curveballs. I kept swinging at them and finally got one over the middle.
“I was yelling ‘Get out of here!’ I screamed and it went out. It felt great. It was kind of a turning point. It was good to be in the right spot at the right time.”
Earlier in the inning, Steve Sutherland got the Tigers on the scoreboard with an RBI single.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Tigers added three more runs off Cage and reliever Derreck Goodine to put the game away. Jason Docherty connected for an RBI single to centre field, and, two batters later, Cory Therrien laced a bases-loaded, two-RBI single to right centre.
The Royals scored both their runs in the bottom of the third. After Chris Chapman and Cage had reached base, Paul Wilson knocked them home with a double off the wall in centre field.
Both teams had seven hits in the game. Cage took the loss, while Brodie Norn — who relieved his older brother Adam in the fourth inning — was the winner.
With the victory, the Tigers became back-to-back playoff champions. They swept the Royals in a best-of-three final last year and were relieved to walk off the field Monday night after being pushed to the limit by the two-time regular-season champions. The Tigers won the first two games 2-1 and 8-1 but saw the Royals bounce back with 3-2 and 6-4 decisions to force Game 5 in the most hotly-contested final in years.
“(The Royals were) phenomenal,” said Desantis, a former member of the junior-aged Prince George Grays who went on to play college ball for the University College of the Cariboo and Thompson Rivers University. “I never thought they were out of it. I thought they could do it at any time. We both have great teams.”
Brodie Norn was picked as the top pitcher in the playoffs. The 25-year-old righty picked up three wins and had an earned-run average of 1.19.
“It was a stellar game,” he said of the clincher. “It was nice of Angelo to hit a bomb for us and then it was nice to add a few more in the last inning. It took the pressure off a little bit.”
For the Royals, the loss was obviously disappointing, especially after climbing back into the series the way they did. In the deciding game, they ran out of pitching and didn’t get the timely hits needed to win.
“We had a couple unlucky bounces,” said 28-year-old catcher Bucky Schmidt, the regular-season MVP. “That two-run shot kind of killed us. I don’t think we really bounced back from that.
“The Tigers hit the ball well,” Schmidt added. “They had everybody hitting. Cage didn’t give up many hits this year. Cager, he usually sits a lot of guys down and they seemed to pick up on that breaking ball. He was tired and he gets inside his own head a little bit sometimes. He’s a great pitcher — probably one of the best pitchers in the league, I would say.”

P.G. Senior Baseball League announces all-stars, award winners

Aug. 28, 2007
The P.G. Senior Baseball League, a 10-team circuit that plays most of its games at Citizen Field, has announced all-stars and award winners for the 2007 season.
Still to be awarded are top hitter, top pitcher and MVP awards for the playoffs. The best-of-five final series starts Tuesday, 6:30 p.m., at Citizen Field, with the Westwood Sports Pub Royals facing the Shallard and Shallard Tigers.
The MVP is Royals catcher Bucky Schmidt, whose power hitting from the left side of the plate keyed the offence of the first-place team all season – every one of his 26 hits seemed to come at a key moment in the game. The naming of Schmidt ends a two-year MVP reign of Adam Norn of the Shallard and Shallard Tigers, who was named to the all-star team and shared the home run award with Evan Potskin of the Treasure Cove Pirates.
The Royals have three players on the all-star team, including first baseman Paul Wilson, outfielder Chris Chapman and right-handed pitcher Jason Cage. The Predators, who finished fourth, placed three players in third baseman Chad Craig, outfielder Derek Knight and left-handed pitcher Connor Flynn. The rookie-of-the-year is Phil Jones of the expansion Treasure Cove Pirates.
The complete list is below.

Axemen out of provincials
The Axemen lost 4-0 to Nanaimo and 10-1 to Victoria to be eliminated from provincials. Adrian Mancini (Kamloops) and Rob Gauthier (Coquitlam) were the losing pitchers.
Just six PGSBL guys went to provincials with the Axemen this year -- Derek Knight, Cory Therrien, Rob Christenson, Bobby Trippel, Jim Swanson and Riley Ferster. The rest of the team had to be added from other cities like Kamloops and Vancouver just to field a team.
This is the last year the double-knockout format will be used, it is now a round-robin with three guaranteed games.
Next year's provincials are in Kelowna, the same August long weekend. All league players are invited to show interest in representing the league/region.

P.G. Senior Baseball League Player-Of-The-Week

The Prince George Senior Baseball League, a competitive 10-team league that plays games at Citizen Field, is pleased to announce its Player-Of-The-Week award.
The winner for the week (through games of July 28) is:

Adam Norn, P, Shallard and Shallard Tigers

Adam Norn is generally feared as one of the more dangerous hitters in the P.G. Senior Baseball League, but it is his aching arm that has been doing the damage recently for the third-place Shallard and Shallard Tigers. Norn, a right-hander who also plays middle infield and outfield spots, was 2-0 with just one earned run allowed and 14 strikeouts in two solid outings. One of Norn’s outings came in relief Saturday as his team rallied for a 5-4 win over the Quesnel Jacks. Offensively, Norn is second in the league with three home runs.
Honourable mentions go to outfielder-turned-pitcher Chris Clark of the BID Construction Grays, who was 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA in helping the Grays get to within a half-game of the Westwood Sports Pub Royas; Clark’s teammate and brother Doug, who batted .727 with seven runs batted in; and Barry Yip Remax/Moxie’s Gladiators hurler Ryan Yorston, who was 2-1 as the Gladiators leap-frogged the Quesnel Jacks into fifth place in league standings.

Players of the week to date:
Week ending May 20 – Paul Wilson, Westwood Sports Pub Royals
Week ending May 26 – Bucky Schmidt, Westwood Sports Pub Royals
Week ending June 2 – Brad Neighbour, Quesnel Jacks
Week ending June 9 – Jason Cage, Westwood Sports Pub Royals
Week ending June 16 – Brodie Norn, Shallard and Shallard Tigers
Week ending June 23 – Graham Allard, BID Construction Grays
Week(s) ending July 8 – Chris Chapman, Westwood Sports Pub Royals
Week(s) ending July 28 – Adam Norn, Shallard and Shallard Tigers

Axemen lose in final Kelowna
The Prince George Axemen beat Trail 4-1 to open the Canada Day Blast tournament at Elks Stadium on Friday, then dropped a 5-1 decision to Coquitlam on Saturday afternoon.
On Sunday, the Axemen lost 3-2 to the St. Albert Tigers, but still advanced to the playoff round on the strength of a low total of runs allowed. Lefty Trevor Strandlund took the loss in that game, but pitched very well.
Later Sunday, the Axemen ousted the previously unbeaten Kamloops Sun Dogs, who were so rattled and classless that starting pitcher and loser Pat Brown resorted to throwing a pitch at the head of Prince George reliever Andrew Brock when he was at the plate in the sixth inning, then their manager, TRU program coach Ray Chadwick, wouldn't shake hands with some team players when the game was over. The Axemen scored two runs late on a flare to left by Chris Clark, winning 6-3 in a game noted for sloppy defensive play by the Sun Dogs. Adrian Mancini was the winning pitcher, and Brock earned the save. Former PG residents Chris Allard and Geoff Fahlman are top players for Kamloops this season.
In Monday's playoff game, pitcher Luke Lampard was impressive in a 9-0 win over Nanaimo, a mercy-rule that ended after six innings.
In the final against Burnaby, the Axemen trailed 2-1 in the sixth inning when the five-time provincial champions rallied for four runs. Brent Suecroft took the loss, but five pitchers combined to battle on the mound for the Axemen. Final score was 6-1 as the Burnaby Bulldogs repeated as tournament champions.

2007 ANGELO NADALIN MEMORIAL ICEBREAKER TOURNAMENT

TQ Insulators Titans and Panago Predators meet in the final, game tied 4-4 and called after four innings due to all pitchers being past their limits.

PGSBL AGM

The PGSBL's annual general meeting has been held, and there is a new executive in place for the 2007 season. Remaining president is Dave Barry; serving with him on the executive are Adam Norn, Ryan Yorston, Ken Wood and Lance Brommeland.
A general meeting date will be announced soon. All are encouraged to attend -- those who don't take time to attend have no right to whine and complain! A lot of key decisions and directions are determined at these meetings, and the executive wants to involve more people in brain-storming and planning.

NEW PARK NAMED -- PRINCE GEORGE CITIZEN FIELD

Story courtesy The Prince George Citizen

Prince George Citizen Field will be the name for the new senior men’s baseball stadium in Carrie Jane Gray Park.
The Citizen struck a deal with the city to have the naming rights to the facility for the next 10 years, it was announced Monday. Money from the first three years of the deal will be used to buy an electronic scoreboard for the stadium.
"It is very exciting for The Citizen and our new owners (Glacier Ventures International) who loved the idea," said the newspaper's publisher, Del Laverdure.
"The opportunity comes around once in a lifetime. It is not very often you can not only put your name to such a spectacular facility but also a brand new one.
"We’ve been in business since 1916 and it is always great to give something back to the city and the people that allow us to be Prince George’s community newspaper.
"This is a fantastic legacy for the Citizen, our carriers and staff, past current and future."
Prince George Senior Baseball president Dave Barry also welcomed the news.
"We appreciate the contribution from the Citizen and thank city council for the funding to provide such an excellent facility,” said Barry.
