Host Message

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to the 2005 Baseball Canada Senior Championship! Your host committee has been working very hard to ensure your stay in Kamloops is a memorable one. From the start of this endeavor the City of Kamloops has worked side by side with the organizing committee to ensure the needs of this tournament are not only met but surpassed. It is because of this partnership that we are confident your stay with us will be enjoyable.

In 2002 the Kamloops City Council moved from being known as the Tournament Capital of British Columbia and declared itself the Tournament Capital of Canada. The City then went about securing this claim by declaring 2003 The Year of the Tournament. That year, Kamloops hosted 90 major tournaments. However, Kamloops’ commitment to success did not end there. In 2003 Kamloops residents voted to spend 36.7 million dollars on new and existing sporting facilities. That amount has recently been supplemented by the BC Provincial Government to the tune of 6 million dollars. From August 25th-28th, 2005 Kamloops will showcase their facilities, specifically, over one million dollars in renovations to Norbroc Stadium, the site of the 2005 Baseball Canada Senior Championship. You can click on the photos link for some great shots of the Norbroc Stadium construction site. We will keep this section updated so you can follow the progress. We know you will be impressed!

As you navigate through this web site you will find information on the City of Kamloops, the Championship, facilities, accommodations and many other interesting facts. One thing that visitors should pay particular attention to is the weather. Kamloops is described as being semi desert and as such, can reach temperatures in the low 40's. In 2003 Statistics Canada conducted a weather survey of Cities in Canada. Kamloops placed 1st for hottest summers, 2nd for driest City and 2nd for warmest spring. More recently, the average temperature for May of 2005 was 24.2 C, with a high of 36.5 degrees C on May 29th. Translation, prepare for the heat!

The organizing committee is well aware of the environmental factors that may pose difficulty for some teams and for that reason we have taken the necessary steps to help make sure the sun is less of a factor. With the new design, dressing rooms have direct access into the dugouts so players can escape for a cool retreat between innings if the need arises. We will also ensure there are plenty of fluids available for the teams during games. Please do your part and become familiar with the sunstroke precautions by clicking on the link in the handouts section.

We would also like to draw your attention to the Canadian Baseball facts and trivia link, found in the handouts section. Credit goes to Tony Parker on a job well done! Tony is a local baseball enthusiast with great knowledge of the game and an obvious passion for its’ roots. There’s some great information in this section.

I would also encourage all visitors to check out the City of Kamloops web site in the links section. There you can find information on recreational activities to enjoy while you are in the City. Our goal is to make this experience enjoyable during and between games. With that in mind, we invite you to send any questions you may have to our committee.

We hope you enjoy your stay in Kamloops. We’re looking forward to your arrival!
